Chuck's Epic 1972 Adventure Howdy! As I mentioned in my Wednesday newsletter, I just finished purchasing my dear friend, Lyle Pierson's, comic book collection from his estate administrator. What I did not elaborate on in that first announcement was that Lyle was the one who drove me to my first comic book convention, which was Oklahoma '72. My parents were against my going to sell comics out of state at such a young age (17) so I had to have Lyle back his Ford Econoline van (complete with fake fur wall coverings and giant speakers!) up to my parent's driveway at 5 AM. We quietly loaded my boxes of comics and various kinds of comics memorabilia into his van, and booked it toward Oklahoma as dawn broke in the sky. My parents were peeved when I called them later in the day from OKC, but they knew (and liked) Lyle, so no hysterics ensued. Chuck with a few of the Golden Age issues I cannot express in words just how critically important that journey turned out to be in the creation of Mile High Comics. Simply put, I took like a fish to water in that Oklahoma City dealer's room for three days, buying, selling, and trading comics like a crazy little chipmunk wired out on speed. All told, I completed $1,800 in transactions, which Google tells me would translate into $13,500+ in today's purchasing power. WOW! I was excited beyond words, and absolutely convinced that I had found my life's calling. On the long drive home, however, I had time to reflect upon the harsher realities of starting a new enterprise from scratch. Simply put, I had kicked butters at the show because I was the new kid in the block, and had all kinds of cool goodies to offer from my previous two years of searching dealer tables at the monthly Colorado Springs Antiques Fair for items even remotely related to comics or pop culture. Those rare items were now all gone, however, and that meant that from now on I needed to compete at future shows based upon my core comics stock, which quite frankly, was weak, at best. AMAZING FANTASY (1962) (MARVEL) #15 By the time we returned to my parent's home in a suburb south of Colorado Springs, I let Lyle know that I had decided to throw my entire personal comics collection into the pot, sacrificing even my my long-sought-after key Marvel issues, such as Amazing Fantasy #15 and Avengers #1. Lyle agreed that was the only way that I would ever grow the business, and soon thereafter became an enthusiastic purchaser of my runs of early Marvels. Now, do I know exactly which issues that Lyle purchased from my collection? Nope, no way. I kept no records, and neither did Lyle. But, the six major issues that I was still needing to complete my Marvel runs (FF #1-#3, Hulk #1, #2, and Tales to Astonish #27) just happened to also be the exact same issues that were not in Lyle's collection when I bought it on Wednesday. I also remember certain flaws on selected issues, as I purchased most of my 1962/1963 Marvels from legendary Denver comics dealer, Jim Payne, during 1970 and 1971. Seeing those old Marvel issues at Lyle's house was definitely me revisiting some of my most beloved old friends. Avengers #1 As a postscript to this story, after all the fun that we had in Oklahoma City in 1972, Lyle readily agreed to drive me to San Diego Comic-Con in 1973. We also had an incredibly awesome time together at that show. Afterwards, he drove my now-burgeoning comics inventory for me up to my newly-leased little apartment in Boulder so that I could commence my sophomore year at the University of Colorado. I had no idea after I bid him a cheery farewell on that sunny fall day that I would never see him again. I only found out years later that he returned to Colorado Springs that afternoon, and pretty much immediately became a recluse. He married for a little while, but he never again participated in any comics events or (as best I can tell) ever bought another comic book. He just hung on to the ones that he got from me (along with a few that he purchased from Jim Payne and at the two conventions), and quietly sat in his house for the next fifty years rereading them over and over again. Chuck with a few of the "key" issues on Wednesday I thought about Lyle often during the intervening half century, and even had hopes that he would come to visit me after his sister kindly intervened, and offered to drive him up to Denver. That trip never materialized, however, as he just could not find it in himself to leave his house. I did learn that he had followed my career right up to the point of his passing, however, living vicariously through my various adventures and trevails. Learning just on Monday that he passed away made me profoundly sad, but his was a path that diverged from mine fifty years ago. Truthfully, he was the older brother that I never had as a lonely teen, but then he just quietly drifted away. It was all very sad. May he rest in peace. I claim no past ownership over his old DC's and miscellaneous Golden Age comics, although the odds are good that I also sold them to him, or at the very least helped him to buy them from other dealers at shows. That was just how we rolled. Chuck is keeping for his collection this incredibly rare Overstreet #1 (blue) that he sold to Lyle in 1971. Well, that's it for today.
