Howdy!

One of the more unusual aspects of my writing this newsletter, is that I operate Mile High Comics, and much of my personal life, with a startling degree of transparency. I most frequently have that fact brought home to me when I am at conventions, as quite a few of my fellow comics retailers keep up with my travels, and also are very aware of the various sales and promotions that I initiate for you.

Having so many people be intimately knowledgeable about my day-to-day efforts can be a little disconcerting on occasion, but can also be quite helpful. As a case in point, I was buying comics yesterday at John Paul's Clifton, New Jersey mini-convention. Before I even arrived at the show, pretty much every professional comics dealer in the dealer's room was already aware that we have a 50% off codeword in effect for you right now. As a direct result, I experienced a very generous level of understanding when I explained that I had to pay a little less for mixed groupings of older comics than I sometimes had in the past. That isn't to say that I was able to close every wholesale comics deal that I perused, as there were several instances where the asking price just did not leave us enough operating margin to cover all of our costs, especially when our current 50% off codeword discount was taken into account. By the end of the day, however, I was offered than enough great comics buying opportunities to use up my entire budget, so my efforts ended up being a great success.

On the other side of the equation, my being candid about trying to make my wife, Nanette's, life a bit easier via the codeword sale has also elicited an outpouring of support from the readers of this newsletter. I want to personally thank you for your kindness. The orders that we have received over the past 45 days have allowed us to catch up substantially with all of our key vendors, and several smaller ones. This has reduced the number of phone calls that Nanette has had to deal with to almost zero, which was my specific goal when I first made the unilateral decision to sacrifice some of our best comics at half price. We have not yet completely recovered from the cash flow erosion that we experienced during the two difficult years of this past recession, but with our sales now having risen substantially for eight straight months, we are quickly regaining our financial vitality. Thank you!

As an aside, one point that may have been forgotten during my recent discussions of my motivations for initiating our 50% off codeword sale is that it is also a tangible reward for those of you who stuck with us, even during the most difficult days of the recession. Three years ago, when the stock market was in free fall and the housing market first crashed, funding our operations became quite difficult. Many comics collectors became fiscally cautious, and we saw our orders fall substantially. At the same time, a huge number of great comics collections came on the market at fire-sale prices. Faced with those two compelling external pressures, I had to make a strategic decision as to whether to just hunker down and wait out the financial storm, or to go out on the road and (somehow) buy a portion of those great comics deals.

Clearly, I chose the path of expansion, rather than retreat. That decision eventually paid off wonderfully, with our being able to add over one million additional back issues into our online offerings for you. None of the success that I achieved would have been possible, however, with Nanette stretching and scrambling for nearly three years to keep our company checkbook covered while I bought, quite literally, hundreds of great comics collections. That is precisely why, now that the comics market has improved substantially, that I am sacrificing a portion of our huge back issue inventory to you at half price. Not only does this half price sale allow me to help to restore Nanette's peace of mind, but it also provides me with an opportunity to reward those of you who helped us with fantastic deals on great old comics. Suffice it to say, I am sincerely grateful to you, and to Nanette, for all of your help during this difficult period.

I'll close out today's newsletter by letting you know that I am going to keep the 50% off NANETTE2 codeword in effect for you at least through the end of this week (please keep in mind the codeword does not apply to new comics, statues, or supplies). While the progress that we've made in catching up has been great, we still are not completely current with everyone. That being the case, I am leaving the 50% off codeword sale in effect for a while longer, in the hope at those of you who have all by now received your first half price orders might wish to place a reorder with us, also at half price. Pam's inventory crew has added over 50,000 choice back issues into our online inventory since the half price sale began, so our New-In-Stock and Premium New-In-Stock listings for the last couple of weeks are chock full of great back issue comics, magazines, trade paperbacks, and hardbacks. With all but our newest back issues on sale for you at half price right now, there are some fantastic deals waiting for you at Mile High Comics!

Happy Collecting!
