Feeding Denver's Hungry Shutting Down Howdy! I am in a somber mood today, even though I have been receiving quite a bit of good news. The reason for my melancholy is that I have been out salvaging fixtures and supplies from two longtime Denver-area businesses that are being forced to close. The first is Kolacny Music on South Broadway, a beloved musical instruments supplier (and repair shop) that was first opened way back in 1930. They survived wars and recessions, but could not overcome the declines in business caused by COVID, combined with the reduction of music programs in our public schools. They received a goodly offer for their building (which they owned), and took it as a way to retire gracefully. They will be greatly missed by many in our community. Beaty/Denverite On a much more personal note, yesterday afternoon I hauled two massive cargo van loads of packaged foods and supplies out of the Feeding Denver's Hungry warehouse. After fifteen years of helping to alleviate hunger for tens of thousands of people in the Denver area FDH founder, Jim Scharper, has finally thrown in the towel. While government cutbacks in aid for the poor played a small part in his decision to shut down, the real issue was his own deteriorating health (Jim suffers from long COVID and diabeties) combined with an inability to find a stable warehouse space from which to operate. Chuck and Jim with one of the thousands of cargo vans filled over the years. Simply put, when his current landlords (who were incredibly kind by giving him their surplus warehouse space to use nearly for free) told him that he had to move to a different one of their buildings for the third time in less than two years, he decided that the moment in time had come to finally give up. As much as he might have wished otherwise, agonizing neuropathy in both of his feet made it impossible for him to effectively relocate the (well over) 100 tons of food and equipment that FDH kept continually on hand. With no full-time staff (FDH is entirely staffed by part time volunteers) to pitch in to help, Jim had to concede that this time that it was game over. Chuck helping out FDH in 2022 What makes this all of this so personal to me is that I have been one of Feeding Denver's Hungry's largest financial supporters, donating heavily to help Jim in his mission to feed the most desperate of Denver's poor. It was also Jim Scharper who inspired me to begin making twice-a-week food deliveries with my huge cargo van directly to the miserable residents of the pitiful tent colonies that litter Denver's lower downtown, providing me with two tons of fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, and processed foods for each delivery run that he accessed for me from Denver's wonderful Food Bank of the Rockies. We're it not for Jim Scharper, I would never have been able to garner the supplies that I ultimately used to help so many of Denver's poor for two years. Chuck helping out FDH in 2021 Anyhoo, the US Army was sending a semitrailer and 40 soldiers to clear out much of the FDH warehouse today, so I packed up what I could yesterday. I filled my cargo van once with three tons of surplus processed foods that I am going to drive down to Two-Tone Grant in Albuquerque in December, and then filled it a second time with warehouse odds and ends that we can use at Mile High Comics. If I can, I will be renting a dock-high truck this afternoon and going back out there one last time to pick up one of the huge three-door refrigerators that Jim is selling for a fraction of their original cost. They are about all that's left from what once filled a cavernous building that was nearly as large as our Jason St. Mega-Store. What took a decade and a half for us to build was totally dismantled in a matter of a couple of weeks. Suffice it to say, my heart aches with sadness and bitterness at this terrible turn of events. Two-Tone Grant with some amazing volunteers While I spent most of last night too depressed to sleep, I did take some solace in the fact that my beloved Mile High Comics is still here, and in many regards, thriving. It has been a very tough past few months, but through diligent saving and much hard work we were able to pay not only all of our current liabilities as they came due, but also the ghastly $156,000 in property taxes that are accessed on Jason St. each year. We also covered what was owed on my personal taxes, and paid off our 2022 Federal income taxes today. Woo! Barring some sort of a catastrophe, we are now in good financial shape through at least this time next year. Given the uncontrollable vagaries of fate, however, I have come to realize that simply surviving for an additional year is truly a gift worth savoring. 'Nuff said.
