Huge Order Placed For Intentional Downgrades Howdy! I want to begin today by letting you know that I was quite pleased to see an order for $1,500+ placed on our website last evening that was entirely for comics that we had listed in "Fair" condition. This order especially pleased me because it has now been nine months since I first suggested to Will and Pam that they start filling in all of our missing lower grades on our website with higher grade comics, regardless of how much it decreased their price. X-MEN (1963) (#1-113, UNCANNY X-MEN #114-544) (MARVEL) #201 NEWSSTAND My rationalization for these "intentional downgrades" was to note that we are positively inundated with thousands of long boxes filled with great comics right now, surplus issues that are originating from the vast spectrum of collections that we are buying daily in our Jason St. Mega-Store. Simply put, I asked why we were sitting on this vast overabundance when we know that a great many fans are operating on limited budgets? To my way of thinking it is far better to get comics back into the hands of people who want to read them, even if that means selling them for little (or no) actual profit. Long story a bit shorter, Will and Pam have been downgrading thousands of comics for you each month since our new program began last October. Our best estimate is that they have now downgraded somewhere in the neighborhood of 65,000-70,000 individual issues, starting with the highest missing grade, and then gradually filling in all of the voids down to "Fair." I realize that it is impossible for you to compare our website listings of last October to today's, but trust me when I say that almost all of the modern issues where we once only offered the NM option have now been supplemented with at least some lower grades, oftentimes to the point of our offering you all six of our grade options. Now, as I promised you on Friday, I am today continuing my tale of the 20-year anniversary (August 12th, 2003) of my nearly passing away from West Nile Fever-induced encephalitis. The most cogent point about my 2003 illness (which began with a bite from an infected mosquito) is that it never totally shut me down. Much like a really bad COVID infection (the two viruses are quite similar), I was incapacitated to the extent that I was sleeping upwards of twenty hours per day, and suffered from a brain fog that made even reading my daily e-mails a difficult struggle. Blessedly, I was able to engage in minimalist conversations, and did provide some guidance (by phone) to my managers at Mile High Comics. Chuck with his good friend, Will Eisner, July 2005, while recovering from his first illness The bad part about my first iteration of the illness was that my debilitation seemed to abate a bit after four weeks, so I went ahead with a long-standing plan to fly with my uncle (who was visiting from Germany) to New York City to attend a comics show and a 9/11 memorial service. That journey turned out to be a dreadful mistake, as the stresses of that travel greatly amplified my mental confusion, and left me essentially homebound through Christmas. In defense of my bad decision to travel, it is important to note that while West Nile Fever and COVID are very similar, West Nile is not infectious between people without a mosquito acting as a vector, so it was not treated as a public health emergency in quite the same way as COVID. To this day, there is no West Nile vaccine, as no government funding was ever allocated. Also, 90%+ of people who contract West Nile experience flu-like symptoms for about a week, and then totally recover. Even during our vast northern Colorado outbreak of 2003, that meant that fewer than 1,000 people suffered long term affects, a number far too low to elicit any governmental intervention or assistance. Chuck in 2005 at the farm after a snow storm Another way in which West Nile Fever is quite similar to COVID is in the tremendous variation in symptoms within groups of people. I eventually became a part of a West Nile survivors support group at a local hospital sponsored by our County Health Department, and discovered that I was the least impacted of the dozen (or so) other members. One lady was paralyzed from the waist down, while others had night sweats (and bone-wracking chills) that kept them from ever getting a full night of rest. Most had been forced by ongoing brain fog to quit their jobs, including two private attorneys and an assistant District Attorney. It was dreadful. Most common, however, were agonizing migraine-like attacks that made people go fetal for up to 24 hours per episode. That was my main symptom, and those episodes could strike me totally out of the blue. As a case in point, I collapsed in agony on the Saturday afternoon at the 2004 San Diego Comic-Con (nearly a year after my initial infection), and had to crawl under one of our tables for several hours to get away from the bright lights and noise. I was woozy, but basically OK, the next day, but I have to share that it was just gawdawful to have the threat of yet another painful migraine episode hanging over me, 24/7. Chuck in 2005 in the Pumpkin Patch at Jay Hill Farms The good news is that my brain fog and migraine symptoms gradually lessened in frequency between 2003-2006, so by the beginning of 2007 I was starting to feel "normal" again. My comfort was short-lived, however, as in late July of that year I once again began suffering from moments of mental confusion. At first, I thought it was just my brain playing tricks on me, but as I once again started not being able to remember even my most longstanding and rote patterns (like how to drive home...), I began to realize that I was devolving into a second iteration of West Nile. Ironically, this second moment of total mental confusion struck me on the exact same day (!), August 12th, as my first, as I was once again attending the sacred ritual dances at Santa Clara Pueblo. In retrospect, I speculate that the long bouts of rhythmic drumming that accompanies those ancient dances somehow acts as a trigger to my brain swelling, but in all honesty there is simply no concrete way to connect the two. All I know is that on that day I once again experienced incredibly vivid dream visions of sacred Avanyus in the main Santa Clara dance plaza.
