The 2003 Day When Chuck Nearly Died

Howdy!

Without wishing to sound in any way morbid, I want you to know that you are only receiving this newsletter from me today because I defied the odds, and did not pass away 20 years ago. My story is relatively simple: shortly after August 1st, 2003, I awoke in my bedroom at Jay Hill Farm to hear a mosquito buzzing. It was about 3 AM, and pitch black, but I could clearly hear that malicious little insect's determination to feast upon us.

Chuck in 2003 while very sick with West Nile Fever

Looking back on that moment, I now readily acknowledge that I should have turned on the light and done whatever it took to murder that malevolent little beast. But, I didn't. Sadly, it is upon such tiny (and seemingly inconsequential) decisions that our continued existence sometimes depends. In this instance, I awoke the next morning with a huge welt on my left butt cheek, proof positive that I had provided an unwilling meal to our blood-sucking middle-of-the-night marauder. Dammit!

Were this the end of the tale, my being subjected to a nasty mosquito bite would be of no real consequence. In 2003, however, West Nile Fever invaded Colorado, having been carried westward across our state line from Nebraska by birds. We now know that the same Culex mosquito that bit me must have previously feasted upon one of those sick birds, thus becoming a transmission vector (to me) for West Nile Fever.

Shortly after that initial mosquito bite, I started feeling a bit out-of-sorts. Nothing I could put my finger on, but bouts of dizziness and spatial disorientation started becoming more frequent. As a case in point, I drive home to Boulder on US 36 every day from our Mile High Comics offices. When I get to Boulder, there is a very simple split in the Foothills Highway exit ramp, with the left hand side leading northward to my farm, and the right hand turn going southward to Boulder's Table Mesa suburb. After having made the turn to the left over 10,000 times, I found myself having total panic attacks because I had (somehow) forgotten which way to turn to get home. Now, that was truly disconcerting.

Rather than letting those moments of mental confusion slow me down, however, I charged full-steam-ahead with my late summer plans to visit Santa Fe, and to join my friends Eloy and Millie Naranjo at their home at the Santa Clara Pueblo for their annual "Feast Day" ritual dances. Nanette wasn't up for going that year, so I took off on that 400-mile journey by myself after work, arriving at my little motel in Santa Fe at 10 PM. I fell asleep almost right away, but slept quite fitfully, as I was having all sorts of weird dreams.

I awoke (as I typically do) at 5 AM the next morning, but simply could not summon the strength to get out of bed. No matter how hard I tried to get up, I felt utterly exhausted. I finally awoke for a second time at 9 AM, in a total panic because I was going to be late getting northward to Santa Clara for the 10:30 starting time. I dressed in a hurry, threw my little traveling bag in the car, and then drove the 25 miles northward to the Pueblo at slightly (ahem) above the speed limit. Throughout that journey I felt really dizzy and just a bit "off," which I attributed at the time to the weirdness of my oversleeping.

Once I arrived at Santa Clara, I walked to Eloy and Millie's house, and settled in to watch the groups of dancers performing their Pueblo's sacred song and choreography rituals. That's when things started getting very strange for me, as I began having dream visions (hallucinations) of sacred Avanyu deities soaring throughout the dance plaza. Avanyus are Demi-gods that represent the kinetic energy of the universe within the Tewa universe and are they most often associated with lightning and the rushing power of water. Truth be told, however, they represent ALL energy that exists in our universe (including space and time), and as such they are literally the most powerful beings in existence.

The Avanyu tattoo that Chuck got on his back after recovering from West Nile

Long story short, my dream visions during those initial sacred dances became so disorienting that I finally begged off watching the last couple of dances, and staggered my way back to where I had parked my car. By the time I made it there I knew that something was seriously wrong with me, as I had difficulty with remembering how to start my car. It was at that point that I called my wife, Nanette, and told her that I was really out of it, and was heading for home immediately. She begged me to be careful, and told me that she would take me to the hospital the minute that I arrived home.

Truth be told, I remember very little of that 400-mile drive back to Boulder. I do remember stopping for gas at a minimart in Monument, Colorado, and having to beg the clerk at the counter to please pump gas into my car for me, as I could no longer remember how to pay with a credit card, or how to turn on the pump. When I finally did make it back to our farm, Nanette immediately took me to the Emergency Room at Boulder Community Hospital, where I was quickly diagnosed as suffering from a case of severe West Nile Fever.

In any other year, I would have been immediately hospitalized. In 2003, however, the beginning of August was a moment in time when all of the ICU beds in the county (and most of northern Colorado) were already filled with people suffering from West Nile Fever. Over 7,000 cases were diagnosed before they stopped even testing, and 70 people ultimately died. It is now recognized as the single worst outbreak of West Nile Fever in the entire history of the United States.

I am past my deadline today, so I will stop here. I will continue my tale in Monday's newsletter. Suffice it to say, however, that if I had died on that dreadful day of August 12th, 2003, Mile High Comics would have most likely ceased to exist. ‘Nuff said.

STARBOY (WEEKND PRESENTS) (2018) #1

Before I go, I quickly have to mention that our 60% off TAXES! codeword sale on all ten million-plus of our back issue comics and magazines is still ongoing. Only new issues, a few variants and restored comics, and our professionally-graded items are exempt. If you have yet to utilize the 60% off sale to score some of our intentionally-downgraded comics for as little as $2 each, I urge you to act now! We are over 80% of our way to our goal, so this is probably not going to last much longer.

Happy collecting!
