Chuck Walks Away From A $350,000.00 Comics Purchase

Howdy!

I spent part of my morning today sweltering on a driveway in the sun in 90-degree heat, before finally being invited into a suburban house in North Denver to look at a deceased collector's comic book collection. I would normally have not gone through such a physically unpleasant exercise, but I was genuinely curious about what was transpiring with the film crew that was running this ostensible "Estate Sale."

Well, (surprise, surprise!), this sale turned out to be a total fiasco. First off, despite listing photos of hundreds of great comics in their online "Estate Sale" advertising, the principals of the video company running the event refused to sell any of the listed comics to individual collectors. The gentleman who was standing in line with me on the first day (Monday) told us that he brought $25,000 in cash to the sale, only to be brusquely turned away. I had brought (a mere...) $10,000, but despite being the owner of Mile High Comics, was also turned away by the video team's utterly clueless gatekeepers. Not only could we not buy any of the advertised comics on Monday, but we were not allowed to even LOOK at them. Crazy.

Anyhoo, I wrote to the production company's manager in Burbank, CA nicely explaining who I was, and asking if I could view the collection on Tuesday. I received an email later that day (yesterday) explaining that they were seeking $350,000.00 for the collection, and was I interested at that price? Well, Will Moulton had actually gone through the extensive list of CGC books that they had shown in their online listing, and come up with a full current retail in the grades shown as being $120,000.00. We could (at the very most) afford to pay 60% of retail, which would be $72,000.00, so there was a huge gap between what they were seeking, and any sort of grounding in mainstream reality.

That having been said, there are sometimes hidden gems in collections that can elevate the net value considerably, so I thought to myself, "why not?" I'll only be killing a morning that I would have spent weed-whacking at my farm in Boulder, which is no big deal.

Long story a bit shorter, when I was finally allowed in the room that held the bulk of the collection (40-50 long boxes), I was presented with two stacks of "raw" older comics to look through. Most were keys and semi-keys in "Fair" to "Fine" condition, with a smattering of VF issues. All of my inner alarm bells began going off, however, when I detected a faint fold mark on one key issue, a flaw that had become almost undetectable through exceptionally clever coloring of the line break. Yow!

Sad to say, the next key issue that I looked at had also been colored, so I stopped even looking. This collection was/is still (obviously) quite valuable, but ferreting out which books had been restored was going to take many hours of research with a very strong broad spectrum UV light. This was definitely not going to be an easy purchase.

If condition (and my total inability to look through the 40-50 boxes) had not already been a deal-killer, once I met the man in charge of selling the collection for the video company, any and all thoughts that I might have had that this deal could ever fly were completely dashed. His first questions to me (I'm paraphrasing a bit) were "So Chuck, do you own a shop, deal part time, or are you just a fan?"

Seriously? You come into Denver intending to sell a major comics collection without having the slightest clue about Mile High Comics and/or Chuck Rozanski?!? Whomever is in charge of your advance research and/or due diligence needs to be fired, stat. Looking that utterly clueless on a TV show that will be broadcast nationally is NOT a good look. I am not any sort of a household name outside of the world of comics, but here in Denver and throughout the comics community, I am rather well known. Truthfully, being clueless about Mile High Comics while trying to do comics business in Denver just makes you appear woefully uninformed. Sadly, that's the honest truth.

Astonishingly, even after denying me the ability to even look at the vast majority of the collection (and after being told about the negative financial impact of the color-touched keys) the guy from the video company still wanted me to make them an offer. How in the heck was I supposed to calculate that number? Their $350,000.00 number was obviously ridiculous, but all I had seen were issues that totaled about $90,000 at wholesale (which includes $18,000 for those two stacks of raw keys and semi-keys). Without being able to look in those long boxes and/or check for additional restoration on the keys, I was flying completely blind. That having been said, it was clear to me that it was completely impossible for me to even guesstimate an offer.

The end result, is that I simply walked away. I am as big a lover of video drama as anyone in comics, but there was no way that I was going to risk offering well into six figures of our scarce company working capital on a collection that might turn out to be a total clunker. I learned decades ago to always follow my instincts, and in this instance they were screaming at me to get the hell out of there as quickly as possible.

So, I bid everyone on the film crew a cheery farewell, and headed for the safe and comforting confines of our Jason St. Mega-Store. As far as I'm concerned, choosing no deal is far better than agreeing to a lousy deal, and buying a proverbial "pig-in-a-poke" is always a sucker's bet. I am absolutely certain that there will be other deals, with far better transparency, coming up in our near future. I am patient, and I can wait. 'Nuff said.

My only other bit of news for today is that Lynne and her fulfillment team are making excellent progress at working down our shipping backlog. If their current pace holds, we may be back to being completely current by early next week. Simply put, life around here is quite is good right now.
