70% Off All Back Issues - No Limit Howdy! It feels great to be back in the land of the living this morning, after four of the most miserably agonizing days that I have ever experienced. Simply put, my AC failed (a hose worked loose...) in my cargo van at the conclusion of my return trip from New York. Not having AC is typically not a big deal for me, but this breakdown occurred simultaneous with the Colorado State Patrol closing Interstate 76 to all traffic fifty miles outside of Denver due to a wind-driven grasslands/prairie fire that was threatening to sweep up and over the highway. In a congruence of incredibly unfortunate circumstances, this left me sitting on the highway for over half an hour facing directly into the southwestern midday sun. Even with my window rolled down, the temperature inside my van's cab quickly exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and probably surpassed 120. I was literally being cooked alive while stuck in that miles-long traffic jam. Chuck in the desert (on his previous trip) When the State Patrol finally allowed traffic to roll, I was so dizzy that I felt like I was going to vomit. I had to keep things together, however, as I still had another hour of driving required in order to arrive at Jason St., with most of it facing directly into that same blazing late-afternoon sunshine. Suffice it to say, by the time that I arrived at our beautiful Mega-Store I was so weak that I could barely climb the six steps into the store. After our awesome Mega-Store team unloaded my van I drove home to our farm in Boulder, and collapsed. I slept for the next sixty hours straight, suffering through nightmarish deliriums and ghastly nausea the entire time. I lost ten pounds during that three-day span of time, which was reminiscent of the very worst of the terrible migraines that I experienced in 2003, after my first bout of West Nile Fever-induced encephalitis of the Hypothalmus. By midday Sunday my symptoms finally began to abate, and as of this (Monday) morning, I am slowly regaining my strength and vitality. Whew. Chuck Saturday Anyhoo, this long preamble to my actual newsletter is intended to explain why I did not write the initial announcement of the biggest sale in our fifty-year history on Friday. There was just no way that I could write anything that day, as I was barely lucid after suffering my incredibly debilitating bout of heat prostration. Will Moulton stepped in to cover for me, for which I am very grateful, as our first-ever 70% off sale generated over $100,000.00 in back issue orders during just the first 72 hours. WOW. Before I go any further, I want to quickly mention that I came up with our ridiculously generous 50th anniversary sale while driving in the middle of the night across a desolate stretch of I-80 in northern Pennsylvania. Driving alone for long stretches gives me plenty of time to think, and in this instance I kept turning over in my mind what to do to make our 50th incredibly special not just for us, but also for you. As it turned out, it was the very kind article that was published last week in Denver's WESTWORD magazine about my earliest struggles that proved to be the catalyst, as the writer made mention of the fact that when I opened up our first Mile High Comics retail store on September 30th, 1974, my total inventory consisted of about 30 boxes of comics, or about 8,000-10,000 individual issues. Comparing that incredibly modest beginning inventory with the staggering immensity of what we have in stock today (10,000,000-15,000,000 comics and magazines, 300,000+ graphic novels, 100,000+ Pop Culture toys, and at least 3,000 CGC's) made me realize that I needed to give back, in a big way, to everyone who has been so kind and supportive of our efforts for these five long decades. As the accompanying flier expresses quite well, we are going all-out to provide you with wonderful opportunities. 50 Years in Business flyer Before I go, a couple of quick points about the future of Mile High Comics. First, this sale is not financially-driven, as our 65% off sales of this summer have already covered our annual property taxes, which are always scary. A little extra working capital in the kitty is always nice, but we have zero bank debt and no pressing obligations of any kind, so we could have coasted through September/October/November doldrums with only a bit of typical annual belt-tightening. Truthfully, I was inspired to create this sale because I wanted to do something that would make our 50th anniversary memorable for everyone, and I think that it definitely has begun to accomplish that goal. Some "key" issues just added Second, I want you to know that we are not in the slightest bit liquidating Mile High Comics, as our very aggressive purchasing of collections is continuing apace. Take a look at the incredible array of high-grade back issue "keys" that Will Moulton purchased for us on Friday. Not a day goes by that Will and Pam do not purchase at least five collections, and on some days they purchase 10-25 individual collections in a single day. Companies that are not planning to be around for a while don't keep adding to their inventories at such a frenetic pace. Some more "key" issues just added Finally, I want you to know that just as soon as my health returns, I will be driving right back to New York to pick up the 2nd half of the world-class 3,000-piece collection of 500+ year-old Taino (Arawak) artifacts made of pottery, wood, shell, bone, and carved stone that I purchased for my Pueblo Treasures Museum last week.
