SILVER SURFER (1968) (#1-18) (MARVEL) #3 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Silver Surfer (1968) #3
First appearance of Mephisto. "The Power and the Prize!" is written by Stan Lee and drawn by John Buscema and Joe Sinnott. The Silver Surfer is a being of cosmic light; a radiant beacon of hope and peace. It's no wonder he is so repugnant to Mephisto, the satanic lord of the underworld who craves nothing more than to bring him down and subjugate his soul forever. When the star rider succumbs to despair over the overwhelming distrust he suffers at the hands of the humans he tries to save, Mephisto sees his opportunity. Seeking to exploit this crack in the Silver Surfer's faith, the lord of lies preys upon the Surfer's alienation from the mortals he's forced to share the Earth with.

Mephisto's pawn in this deadly gambit is none other than the lovely Shalla Bal, the Silver Surfer's true love from his native planet of Zenn-La whose hand he forsook as Norrin Radd to save his planet from being devoured by Galactus. In his nether realm of the wicked, Mephisto dangles Shalla Bal before the Surfer like a bauble and tempts him with promises of treasure, women and empires he could call his own. But the Silver Surfer remains stalwart much to the ire of Mephisto! Then, follow the strange story of a man convinced aliens are invading and who, after sounding the alarm, wonders "Why Won't They Believe Me?"; one of the Tales of the Watcher written by Lee and drawn by Gene Colan and Paul Reinman.
