Howdy!

Effective at noon on this upcoming Friday, our new codeword discount FCBD! on all of our back issue comics and magazines will be pegged at 60% off. The actual Free Comic Book Day for 2025 will be taking place on Saturday, and we are expecting to once again host very large crowds. I rather doubt that we will hit the 5,500-6,000 people who have visited our Jason St. Mega-Store in years past, but we should have a good turnout, nonetheless.

In case you are wondering, we are expecting a smaller-than-usual turnout this year for two reasons. First, the ongoing bankruptcy proceeding of Diamond Comic Distributors has resulted in minimal national advertising or promotion of this important annual event. Diamond actually "owns" Free Comic Book Day, and since they traditionally raked off a juicy percentage of all variant sales generated (no, the publishers do not give them to us for free...), they had a vested interest in promoting the event. This year, nada.

The second reason why we expect a diminished turnout is the prevalence of worry and internalized trauma on the part of so many people about the current state of our nation. I cannot begin to relate how many of my friends have told me that they are not sleeping well, and who spend considerable amounts of their day being angry and on edge. I am sure that there are still pockets of "True Believers" out there (read the book by Eric Hoffer) who still cling to the belief that America is heading in exactly the right direction right now, but for a rapidly-increasing number of the rest of us, a financial and civil rights apocalypse seems nigh.

All of the previous having been said, my job as the President of Mile High Comics, Inc. is to navigate the risks and perils of any economic and/or political climate. That's where my having been in charge of our operations for 55 years comes in really handy. I kept the company alive through major "stagflation" with 21% interest rates (1980), the "Death of Superman" fiasco (1990/1991), the Marvel Comics bankruptcy (1996) the attack on the Twin Towers (2001), the Great Recession (2008-2011), and (most recently) the COVID shutdowns in 2021. In between, there have been innumerable other moments where our cash flow cratered unexpectedly, and I had to once angain innovate us out of crisis. Not to worry, I've got this...

The good news (at least for us) is that I have been preparing us for a worst-case-scenario for over a decade. I consolidated all of our operations into a single location (which we own), while utilizing the savings from that consolidation to pay off all of our bank and vendor debt. We do still take on some time payments when purchasing very large collections, but we generally work hard to operate strictly on a pay-as-you-go basis. There's just no way that I want to be owing legions of people money just as the economy falls off a cliff. Like it is doing right now.

At the same time, through steady (but judicious) purchasing of collections we have added at least a million more back issues into our inventory over the past three years, many of which remain unsorted. These unsorted back issues comprise a strategic reserve for us from which we can continue to derive great benefit, even if we are forced into a position we temporarily can no longer afford to purchase collections. Belt, and suspenders...

At the same time, as should be easily evident to anyone who peruses our website, the number of back issues that we have "intentionally downgraded" has long since passed 250,000 individual issues, with the vast majority of the back issues that we offer now listing multiple lower-priced options. This is a program that we intend to increase during 2025, providing everyone who shops with us even more low-priced options.

So you know, another program that I am in the process of revitalizing is our 5 lb Bargain Box offerings. We have these listed on our home page, but have otherwise stayed low-key in our promotion of them, as they are already selling faster than we can compile them. Given that 2025 (and 2026?) now look as though we are all going- to-hell-in-an-economic-handbasket, however, I want to make certain that comics reading remains an inexpensive form of entertainment, even for those who have suffered the most misfortune from the idiotic foreign policy currently being implemented in Washington.

I will close today by pointing out that, as just one person, I cannot stop the madness under which we are all suffering. But, I can utilize my vast stash of ten million+ back issues to cushion the blow for many of our longtime clients who have becomes victims of this delusional moment of mindless economic blundering. To me, staying put, and helping our clients weather this storm by sacrificing a part of my comics stash to create a new generation of Bargain Boxes, is reason enough to keep working, even though I am now long-past retirement age. 'Nuff said.
