65% Off Comics - 50% Off Books - FCBD News Howdy! This past weekend was quite robust here at Mile High Comics, as we experienced a huge surge in response to our steep discounting of all of our comics and books via both our website, and through visitors in our huge Denver Mega-Store. We are all very grateful for this positive response, as it will help us a great deal to weather the storm if our government follows the lead of several in Europe, and closes all retail establishments. Since that draconian response has not yet been implemented here in Colorado, we are forging ahead with our normal schedule. The new comics for this week showed up today from Diamond, so our Wednesday new book day should proceed as it has always. UPS, FEDEX, and the PO are all still picking up outbound packages from us, so our team is busting tail to try and get as many online orders shipped today as possible. There is no way, however, that we will be able to get every order that we received over the weekend out, even by the middle of the week, so please do be patient. With our discounts currently pegged at 65% off on all of our back issues, and 50% off on all of our books, we are buried in orders! For those of you ordering new comics from us online, shipments should go out just fine this week. After that, we are dependent upon whether Diamond ships, and/or the shipping companies continue to pick up. We are also quite worried about retail shops being forced to close, so we have cut our new comics deliveries coming to Jason St. during the coming weeks to truly TINY levels. Only 1-2 copies of each title for the shelf... If you don't have a comics title preordered through N.I.C.E., the odds of your being able to buy it from us off the shelf are just about nil. Just saying... On a related topic, one funny online comment that I noticed over the weekend questioned whether we were actually liquidating. To reassure anyone who might believe that to be in the slightest bit true, no, we are not liquidating. We are just determined to provide our dedicated Mile High Comics staff members with as much work as we can through this crisis. If that requires us offering even our best back issue comics and books at cost (or below...) to elicit large volumes of business, then so be it. Truth be told, we are still buying additional collections of comics, books, and toys every single day, which makes that entire liquidating question rather moot. Another question that I saw implied that we are putting people at risk by not just unilaterally closing our Mega-Store. Seriously? Our immense store has over 45,000 square feet of display space, which was never occupied all weekend by more than 30 fans at a single time. Everyone had plenty of room to shop, with minimal contact with other people. We also clean all common areas (door handles, front counter, bathrooms) every hour with alcohol-based disinfectant wipes. There are no perfect solutions, but I think that we are doing a reasonably good job of keeping everyone safe. Poker Flyer All of the above having been said, the one moment when our Mega-Store will be somewhat crowded is next Saturday morning. On that day we will be hosting our monthly benefit poker game, and our monthly no-minimum-bid comics and toys auction. With a governmental edict in place here in Colorado right now banning events with 50+ people, our events will limited to a maximum of 45 participants. So, if you want to take advantage of great odds of winning (poker), or some insanely great comics and toys deals during the auction, we urge you to sign up at the store immediately, before all of the available slots are filled. Auction Flyer In case you are wondering, we are proceeding with a limited version of our auction and the poker game because the money raised this month is being dedicated to help feed the thousands of hungry people living on the streets of Denver. I have been volunteering with "Feeding Denver's Hungry" for over three years, and I have never seen so much need. Simply put, the number of previously economically stable people who have been forced out of their housing in recent months has been just overwhelming. Our line of people waiting to receive a bag of groceries stretched past the next block last month before we even began, and lasted for well over three hours. The number of elderly, disabled, and economically disadvantaged people that we help now numbers in the thousands. There is just no way that I am letting all those hungry people suffer for a month, without our help... Chuck with the Feeding Denver's Hungry Crew On the flip side, it looks right now as though we are not going to be able to host Free Comic Book Day in anything approaching our usual fashion. Our local government just put public gathering restrictions in place through May 11th, which means that we are legally precluded from inviting the many thousands of people who typically visit our store on FCBD, May 2nd. We will still offer FCBD sets via mail order, and may be allowed to orchestrate a curbside pickup at Jason St., but that is all dependent on how this very fluid Coronavirus situation evolves.
