Several years ago, I participated in a small early morning breakfast gathering at the San Diego Comic-Con hosted by DC Comics President, Paul Levitz. The goal of that meeting was to find ways in which to save the DC Archives program, which produced beautiful full-color hardback editions of noteworthy DC comics of the past. Paul, and DC's Marketing Vice President Bob Wayne, had noticed a slowdown in Archives sales, and were debating as to whether to discontinue the program.
As one of only four retailers at the meeting, I argued passionately that the DC Archive editions were a very important tool that helped us to legitimize the validity of classic DC comics as "real" literature in the eyes of the general public. I also expressed that we had a cadre of dedicated fans who loved the look and feel of those wonderful hardback books, and that abandoning the program would disappoint many of DC's most ardent fans.
Blessedly, neither Paul nor Bob wanted to stop printing Archives, and they were very open to hearing suggestions. The key one that I made was that DC needed to improve the discount that they allowed larger retailers on Archives. To explain, it had been DC's policy for over a decade to have Archives at a "Max 45%" discount. That meant that larger retailers, who earned discounts ranging from 50%-57% off of cover price on other DC publications, were limited to a significantly lower margin on Archives.
My argument was that this lower discount acted as a braking mechanism on retailer enthusiasm for stocking Archives, especially as the line-up of titles grew larger. Put a different way, at a 45% discount, stocking just one copy each of approximately 200 different Archives would cost a retailer $5,500 in working capital. There are very few comics retailers in the world who have the resources to make that kind of financial commitment to support just one product line in their stores.
To make a long story a bit shorter, DC did agree to improve their discounts on the Archives, and the program has continued (in somewhat a scaled-back form) since that breakfast meeting of several years ago. Just two weeks ago, however, DC announced an even more startling discount structure. For just a single week, DC offered us 165 of their best archives editions at an additional 10% off! Now at first glance, this may not seem like such a big deal. But what it meant for us was that, if we were willing to make a huge financial commitment, we could for the first time in our history offer DC Archives to you at a full 50% off (!!!) of cover price.
That's a better price for you than we were receiving from DC on a wholesale basis, just a few years ago! Please do understand, however, that this special deal does not reflect any lack of commitment by DC to their high quality book editions. Rather, they have decided to help comics retailers to achieve better success during these troubling economic times by offering us a one-time incentive on this part of their backlist inventory. Marvel has done this in the past with certain genres (such as X-MEN trade paperbacks and hardbacks) with great success, and now DC is joining them in helping comics retailers with enhanced holiday discount incentives. I could not be more pleased!
All of the above having been said, at the end of this newsletter you will find a
listing of all 160+ Archives
editions that we purchased during this special DC incentive program. They are all available to you at a full 50% discount off of cover price, with free domestic shipping for orders over $50, and free International shipping on orders over $125. International buyers need to be aware, however, that we do charge a shipping surcharge of $4 per hardback even on "free shipping" orders. That's because these books are of such high quality that the coated paper that they are printed upon causes them to be quite heavy. Once shipping costs are factored in, we will actually earn nothing when selling these archives to you at 50% off. It gives me such pleasure to be able to, for just once, lower the price on these great books to the point to where they are affordable to just about everyone, however, that I am willing to forego any earnings in order to make this promotion a success.
Please do be aware, however, that we ordered an average of just three copies each on many of these books (an $8,000 wholesale commitment...), so our supplies are limited at this price. I will continue the 50% off program on our Archives through Wednesday for those who receive their newsletters only at work, but I am certain that quite a few titles will be sold out by Monday. If you want any of these great books at half price either for yourself, or to give as a wonderful gift, I strongly encourage you to place your order right away. Heaven only knows if DC will ever offer us such a great deal, ever again...
I'll close today's newsletter by thanking everyone who has already placed orders with us during our huge "Black Friday" sale on all of our
trade paperbacks and hardbacks.
While the multitude of orders that we have received to this point have not made any kind of dent in our 250,000+ book inventory, our sales results for the past couple of days were nonetheless, excellent. I was particularly pleased to see that a great many of the orders that we received included not only steeply discounted books, but also large numbers of
back issues comics.
With all of our Marvel and DC trade paperbacks at 40%-60% off right now, and all of our other 200,000+ trade paperbacks and hardback books priced for you at 30%-60% off, this is still a great time for you to be building your library. Our 20% extra discount THANKSGIVING codeword is also still in effect for you on all of our back issue comics (but not on books....please keep in mind the codeword does not apply to new comics, Dallas Stephens comics, statues, or supplies), which can make it quite easy for you to reach our free shipping minimums. Please have an excellent holiday weekend, and do remember to tell those that you love how much you care about them, and how much they mean to you. Life is just too short not to fill it with as much love and caring as we possibly can...
Happy Collecting!
