Huge BLACKFRIDAY Comics and Books Sale
Howdy!
It is not an uncommon occurrence for advance weather reports around here to be a bit
overblown. When they say 10"-12" inches of snow we oftentimes actually end up with just
wet roads, and 3" in the grass. Today, however, here in Boulder we have the opposite case,
as we were told to expect 10"-12" last night, and instead received 16"-18". After a brisk
wind arrived early this morning, our 500' driveway to our farmhouse is now drifted completely
shut, with some drifts as high as 36". Yow...
Chuck brushing off the cars.
While not being able to drive in to work today is going to force me to get some much-needed rest,
I can't help but worry a bit, too, as we are just now entering into our critical holiday gifts
purchasing season at
Mile High Comics.
In anticipation of this inevitable seasonal surge in demand we have been purchasing collections
filled with rare and highly desirable comics and collectibles with mad abandon for the past
several months, fully expecting that our surge to begin starting this week. Instead, we are only
(barely) able to open the
Jason St. Mega-Store
today because Will Moulton made the wise decision to stay last night at the Motel 6, on nearby
Federal Blvd. If we take in a total of $100 today at our giant store, it will be a miracle.
Depth of the snow
If all this snow-driven angst seems like no big deal, please understand that almost all small
family-owned local businesses live from paycheck-to-paycheck. We are not sitting in some big pile
of cash reserves, or even a line of credit with a bank. Whatever we receive from
online
orders
that day, or from walk-in customers at
Jason St.,
is all that we have to cover our bills. Under normal circumstances, that is no big deal, as we
have learned quite well how to tighten our belts during slower times. Being nearly completely
shut down at the store, however, is more than a bit disconcerting.
