Howdy!

I just returned at just after midnight last night from an insane 1,644-mile drive to Dallas, and back, all accomplished in a mind-blowing day and a half. As you may have surmised from my many (many!) out-of-state trips, I greatly enjoy long distance driving, and I (blessedly) have far greater driving endurance than most mere mortal men.

Chuck with the 8,000 lbs (3,700 kg) of comics

That having been said, picking up this vast load of newer comics turned into an exercise in great peril, primarily due to the extreme weight entailed with carrying such large numbers of new comics. I had originally guesstimated that I was picking up about 6,000 lbs in comics (2,800 kg), but instead ended up closer to 8,000 lbs (3,700 kg). That is NOT a good number, as my massive cargo van is rated at 5,760, but weight beyond that point causes a tilt to the rear. If that tilting becomes severe, the front wheels end up having minimal contact with the ground, leaving me with (essentially) no steering. Yow!

Long story short, after a (brief, but very scary) 20-mile journey on a Dallas freeway, I found an exit ramp with a gas station, and shifted 500 lbs of boxes from the furthest rear of the van, up into my passenger seat area. That rebalancing did wonders for my steering, but there was still no escaping the fact that this was a very heavy load. The next 800 miles home were an exercise in my being extremely cautious, and never exceeding the speed limit. All turned out well in the end, but the stress was so considerable that I breathed a serious sigh of relief when I finally pulled into my driveway at Jay Hill Farm. Never again will I carry so many new comics in a single load. It just isn't safe.

Anyhoo, despite my miscalculation, I made it safely home, all of those comics are now unloaded into Jason St., and life is actually quite good. The net results of my daring drive were actually quite valuable for the company, as many thousands of these comics will help us to fill holes in the most recent portion of our inventory, and also our online database. Had we purchased these newer comics on a new basis from the publishers our wholesale cost would have been well over $70,000.00, so picking them up for a nominal figure on the secondary market was truly a blessing. 'Nuff said.

Some comics just bought today

On a related note, if you are wondering why we did not send out a newsletter on Monday, I was on the road to Dallas, and Will Moulton was home sick with a flu-like bug that he was gifted from his friends in his bowling league. Sigh... We're a small company, so when Will and I are both out, there's simply no one to write the newsletter. That just the way it is.

While Will was home sick, Pam was here at Jason St. to purchase even more collections, and to keep plugging away at adding to our Premium New-In-Stock link. We are having an amazing number of collections being offered to us right now, some from people seeking cash, but others from collectors wanting to trade. As a case in point, we traded some Silver Age Comics on Sunday for a very large collection of GI Joe vehicles and figures. We sell both, so these kinds of cross-genre trades work well for us. Simply put, our goal is to try and help our fans, by any means possible.

That's it for today. I am quite worn out, and need to go home to rest for a while, and cuddle with my awesome Nicky doggie. If I manage to recover (and the weather remains good), I will leave for an estate sale in Santa Fe on Friday morning, returning to Denver on Saturday evening. My plan is to then head for Kansas City on Monday morning, to look at yet another very large comics collection on Tuesday, returning by Wednesday. After Thanksgiving, Saturday of next week we will host our first-ever holiday toys and action figures auction, which is already looking amazingly great. This frenetic lifestyle may eventually kill me, but quite truthfully I will go out with a smile, as I do love my job with all my heart.
