Half Price Comics Sale - BLACKNOVEMBER Howdy! I'm on an emotional roller coaster today, as two of my friends have passed away in just the past two days. In all honesty, I was not super close with either, and both had ongoing health issues that almost guaranteed their imminent demise. That having been said, we all live in a world that is essentially premised in chaos, where we are all but one drunk driver from oblivion. We do our best to fool ourselves through constructs of friendship and social interaction into believing that some measure of stability exists, and that our lives have a comforting structure, but that illusion easily shattered whenever our friends and family members die, or even when they just move away. The same holds true for our treasured institutions. As I mentioned in my newsletter on Monday, our local wig salon and drag shop, Studio Lites closed over the weekend, after nearly 50 years in business. I have also had two of my best friends recently move to Pennsylvania, and had another friend announce that she was moving to South Carolina in May. That's just so far this month. Damn... Our empty 56th Warehouse What all this turmoil does for me is to increase my fervency of determination that Mile High Comics is going to survive, no matter what may come. In great measure, achieving that goal is why I keep working every day to stabilize our capital base even further. Selling our 56th Ave. warehouse (three years ago) was our breakthrough moment, as that allowed us to finally pay off the entirety of our bank loans. Since that time we have been working steadily to chip away at our remaining short term obligations, while simultaneously investing non-stop in both the overall comics, books, and toys inventory of our company, and also the physical structure of the Jason St. building. So far, so good... Stairwell to Gallery On the happier side of things, I did want to also mention that my incredible Pueblo pottery gallery that I am building on the 2nd floor of Jason St. is starting to look really, really good. That portion of the project which is most evident to visitors of the store is the stairwell by our main entrance, the dusky blue walls of which are receiving a stunningly fabulous coating of pure silver glitter this afternoon. The intended effect that we are trying to create is one of walking up a rainbow into a turquoise sky filled with millions of glittering stars. Immense 30' long Avanyus will eventually be floating above that sparkling night sky, shimmering in rainbow iridescence while they act as the guardians of the entranceway to my pottery heaven. OK, maybe my vision is a little bit over the top in terms of being grandiose, but truthfully, I don't care. Life is just too damn short to not dream really, really big... 2,000 individual pottery items While the stairwell is progressing nicely, my personal office had to be almost completely gutted last evening so that the first few boxes of my new laminate flooring could be installed while I am away this weekend, to an Imperial Court Coronation in Los Angeles. I am confident that the floor will look beautiful when it is finished, but it was still rather distressing to have to move 12 giant showcases, and upwards of 2,000 individual pottery items, in order to make room for John C. to work his flooring magic. Not having a desk at which to work at also seems really strange, but as they say, "you have to break a few eggs in order to make an omelet." I am totally dedicated to finally building my pottery gallery, so I will put up with whatever inconveniences are required to achieve that goal. gift certificates Moving on to news from Mile High Comics, we continue to receive large quantities of holiday gift merchandise with every shipment from Diamond. If you live in Colorado and are looking for scarce collectibles for yourself, or incredibly cool Holiday gifts, you should try to stop by and visit with us this weekend. If you can only shop with us online, we do have gift certificates available in any denomination, and have also been continuing to add vast numbers of scarce comics and books into our online inventory every single day. As an aside, our head buyer, Pam Brandle, is working as fast as she can, but she is having exceptionally large numbers people write to her this week offering to sell us all (or part) of their collections. Please be patient if you write to her (pamb@milehighcomics.com), as she is struggling to keep up with all of the requests for batches of our awesome prepaid shipping labels. This is our most vigorous season for buying collections, as the holiday shopping season always provides us with extra working capital. Come January, we will have to, again, scale back. Poker Flyer On totally different topic, a week from this Saturday (Nov. 23rd) will be our annual benefit auction and poker game to help us to purchase warm winter clothing for those trying to survive the winter on the streets of lower downtown Denver. Please save the date. Sunday, the 24th, will be our next family-friendly All-Ages Drag Show. Kids absolutely love these awesomely entertaining shows, so bring your entire family.
