Howdy!

Happy Indigenous People Day! So you know, this is a holiday that I take very seriously, especially ever since I became the guardian-for-life to over 4,000 ancient Taino artifacts in September of last year. Unless you are of Caribbean descent, you have most likely never heard of the Taino people, as they are no longer recognized as a legitimate tribal nation by the US government, but there are millions of people of partial Taino descent living in Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and eastern Cuba who would beg to differ. They are working very hard to revive their ancestral traditions and language, with the strongest push seemingly based out of Puerto Rico. I wish them all nothing but the best.

In case you are wondering, Spanish chroniclers of the day estimated that the three million Taino people living peacefully in their Caribbean paradise when Columbus arrived became functionally extinct as a race/nation by about the year 1550. They were the very first peoples that Columbus encountered (1492), which turned out to be their greatest misfortune. Not only did they die by the hundreds of thousands from the diseases that the Spanish brought with them from the "Old World," but Columbus observed that they had ornaments and religious articles made of gold that they had obtained from mountain streams in the Dominican Republic.

Since he had promised the small army of conquistadores who accompanied him on his second voyage vast riches, they proceeded to enslave the Taino people, and then worked many of them to death in their quest for more of that gold. Columbus was eventually recalled by Isabel and Ferdinand (themselves no strangers to murderous brutality) and put on trail for the sheer magnitude of his crimes against the Taino, but by then it was too late. Only in the most remote of their villages did their bloodlines and culture survive that initial pulse of genocide.

This kind of historic narrative is hard to hear and/or read, but once a year I think it important to acknowledge that the Americas were densely populated in the period prior to Columbus, and that everything went to hell once the European invaders (and their diseases) arrived. If you are curious, there is an excellent book called "1491" that provides amazing detail into the cultures that existed here prior to Columbus. Ironically, most of the tribal nations (such as those living on the upper Atlantic seaboard who repelled the initial Viking forays), were quite combative and fierce. The poor Taino were much more laid back, and had a political system that sought consensus and decentralization of power to the leaders of individual villages. Sadly, that lack of combativeness (and lack of a rigid social hierarchy) made them easy prey for the Spanish invaders. Sigh...

Anyhoo, moving on to cheerier news, we totally kicked butters over this past weekend here at Mile High Comics, both as regards to our sales in our Jason St. Mega-Store, and also via the flood of 70% off back issue comics and magazines orders that we received from our website. I have been retailing comics for 56 years (51 years from when I opened our first Mile High Comics retail store) and I cannot recall a more robust mid-October period. Our no-minimum-bid comics and collectible toys auction on Saturday was particular strong, so we are now running at a staggering 156% of last year. Yay! Truthfully, there is nothing like having a powerful surge in sales just as a seasonal drop is typically about to hit. I am truly grateful to everyone who came to support our auction on Saturday, and also to everyone who placed a 70% off order via the website. Your kindness (and support) really made my day!

Well, that's it for today. I need to get back to work now on my vast remodeling/expansion of my beloved Pueblo Treasures Museum, as I am expecting some very important visitors to stop by for a museum tour on Wednesday. I do all of the work in my museum by myself, so the next couple of days are going to be particularly stressful. That having been said, our 70% off HALLOWEEN! codeword sale on all of the back issues listed on our website is still smoking as of this afternoon, so at least I know that I can finish up my work in the museum without financial worry.
