X-MEN Hardbacks Only Five Dollars Howdy!
I am in a particularly good mood this morning, as I am reflecting on today being the 39th anniversary of my having opened the first Mile High Comics retail store. On September 30th, 1974 a dream that I had held dear for the five years that I was selling comics at antiques fairs and comic book conventions, finally came to fruition. Starting with just $800 in cash, plus about 30 boxes of really nice older comics, I was finally able to open my very own comic book store!
This very important day in the history of Mile High Comics came to be only because a woman by the name of Lois Newman had just opened a bookstore devoted exclusively to science fiction books. Her store was located in a basement of a historic old bank building in downtown Boulder, that had only recently been completely remodeled. The builders had rented Lois the front part of the huge basement for her bookstore, while retaining the back area for storage of excess bricks, boards, and much trash. After first trying to talk her into carrying some of my convention comics stock on consignment, I ultimately worked out a deal with Lois by which I was able to rent that entire 1,200 square foot storage area behind her store for $95 per month.
While the rent was certainly affordable, a major drawback was that I had no front door. The only way that fans could enter my new comics shop was through Lois Newman Books. A second problem was that the space I rented was so dark, dirty, and dusty that I had to spend nearly all of my $800 in working capital on installing lights, and buying epoxy paints to seal the crumbling concrete floor. I was only 19 years old at the time, however, and very determined, so I pulled two consecutive all-nighters on painting the floor and setting up 20 card tables to hold my comics inventory. In the end, even though the paint on some parts of the floor was still a little wet when I opened on that Saturday morning, I did manage to sell enough to cover my entire rent for the month on my very first day in business... I could continue relating for you much more of the early history of Mile High Comics, but I would rather translate my happiness at today's anniversary into something fun that will make you smile, too. I will close today's newsletter by expressing to you my sincere thanks for helping to make the past 39 years of my life so wonderful and fulfilling. Operating any small business is an endless series of challenges, and during my 39 years of operating Mile High Comics I have seen over 99% of my contemporaries disappear for one reason, or another.
