This is the end of a rough week for me, as I am still struggling to clean up from the huge flood that we had here in Boulder, and a young friend of mine passed away after a long battle with with cancer. Stephen's passing was very sad, but his parting gift to all of us was a heightened sense of awareness of just how much that we need to treasure our moments with our friends and loved ones, while we still blessed to have them. Stephen Grimes 1980-2013 As regards the flooding damage, it seems that every place that I look, I see more. Over twenty inches of rain falling in just five days is more than any foundation can bear, so pretty much everyone that I know in Boulder is dealing with flooded basements. We are blessed compared to those living in the mountains near Boulder, however, a great many of whom had their houses completely destroyed when nearby brooks became raging torrents. Almost every single road leading west of Boulder was washed away, and over 100 miles of our world-famous hiking trails are destroyed. It is going to take us years to rebuild from this unprecedented environmental catastrophe. Dozens of Cars Were Destroyed While my own personal losses (both in terms of damaged collectibles and flood mitigation costs) are considerable, Mile High Comics came through this event pretty much unscathed. Our only real losses were in the business that we did not receive while major highways in the Denver area were closed due to flooding. A substantial portion of our company losses have now been offset, however, by the generous support of those of you who shop with us online. We have seen a noticeable uptick in our online orders this week, many of which contain notes of condolence. We sincerely thank you for your kindness and support. On a related topic, earlier this week I included all of our backlist trade paperback and comics hardback book collections for you in our ongoing HALFPRICE! codeword sale. HALFPRICE! normally only applies to our back issue comics and magazines, but for this week we have also had all 250,000 of our backlist books discounted. We will need to discontinue that 50% off sale on our books (only) on Monday, however, as this is the time of year when we normally are setting books aside in anticipation of the upcoming annual holiday gift-giving season.
