It's the crack of dawn on Wednesday, and I'm already behind today. Our flight for Charlotte leaves at 3 PM, so I'm going to really have to hustle to get my work done. Blessedly, my efforts are not required all that much at
Mile High Comics
these days, as everyone there is plenty busy. The 100,000 comics and trade paperbacks that I shipped back from New Jersey last week arrived yesterday, so Pam's inventory team is fully booked. The same is true for William Murakami's order fulfillment crew, as the flood of orders that we have been receiving over the past few days has them working at record speed.
William is a 28-year veteran of working at Mile High Comics, so he knows quite well how to reorganize our staff for maximum efficiency. His fulfillment team is now shipping two days worth of orders for each day that they are working, so the order backlog that resulted from the sudden upsurge in business that we've received over the past few weeks is now melting away. Suffice it to say, however, that with everyone at
Mile High Comics
already quite preoccupied, the last thing they want today is for me to present them with any new projects and/or ideas...
Speaking of our current sales, I want to genuinely thank all of you who have ordered from us during the past few weeks. It turns out that my agreeing to go along with my assistant, Will Moulton's, idea to drastically lower
our website prices
for all of our back issues, has resulted in this June being the busiest period in our entire 40-year history as a company. The number of huge orders for back issue comics and magazines that we are receiving each day is really quite amazing! None of this could be happening without your support of our efforts, however, so I do really owe all of you a debt of gratitude for validating our very risky move of so drastically lowering our prices. As long as you keep ordering at current levels, I have no problem with keeping our prices at rock bottom for you.
While slashing our prices on a great many of
our comics
to as low as 95 cents each has prompted a flood in back issue sales, I have noticed that our sales of
trade paperbacks and hardbacks
have been lagging a bit for the past two weeks. That's a shame, as we've been stocking up like crazy on thousands of book titles over the past couple of months, in anticipation of the upcoming
San Diego Convention.
Each year for the past five, we've taken approximately $300,000.00 in books to San Diego, and built a massive wall display. Our current plan is to do the same this year, so we've been steadily stocking up on not only popular new titles, but also on many scarce out-of-print books. What will happen over the next few weeks, however, is that we will be pulling our San Diego inventory off of our warehouse bookshelves, and de-listing them from
our online book inventory.
Once those books are gone, fewer than half of them will return from the convention. With all of our books discounted right now at 20%-50% off, this week would be an ideal time for you to work on filling in those missing titles in your library. 'Nuff said.
Moving on to
our buying program,
things are continuing to heat up on all fronts. First of all, our head buyer, Pam Brandle, has been getting inundated with calls (1-800-676-6423) and e-mails
(pam@milehighcomics.com)
from folks looking to sell us comics. With our sales running at a record pace right now, Pam has nearly unlimited cash for buying collections, which is a real rarity in an industry where lots of people glibly offer to buy your comics, but then don't actually have any money to pay you for them. We don't engage in those kinds of deceptive practices, so Pam has found herself (or at least her checkbook...) immensely popular. Because I've been on the road for the past two weeks buying comics at conventions,
our online buying list
is still only completed Marvel "A" - "T." That doesn't slow down Pam's buying, however, of the rest of the Marvel Comics titles, as well as all DC's, Dark Horse, Image, and Independent titles. Just give Pam an idea of what you might have available, and she'll work out a very fair deal with you. We're selling back issues like crazy right now, so we really do need your scarce comics! We are also looking for even more out-of-print trade paperbacks and hardbacks for San Diego, so if you have a library that you wish to sell, now is definitely the time to get in contact with Pam...
While Pam will be handling our buying in Colorado, Will Moulton and I are heading out today to separate conventions to buy even more comics from our wholesale back issue suppliers. As I mentioned earlier, I'm heading to Charlotte for
HeroesCon,
and Will will be at
WizardWorld, Philadelphia.
We both have substantial buying budgets, so we should be sending back tens of thousands of great comics from those two shows. As an aside, while Pam Brandle handles all of our buying in Denver, I do want to point out that Will Moulton is our Executive Buyer, handling all of our major buys (such as entire store stocks...), as well as buying for us at conventions that I cannot attend. I trust Will's judgement to the extent that I give him a five-figure budget to spend at shows, completely without any oversight on my part. At
Mile High Comics
our executive staff averages over 20 years of experience, and there is a great deal of confidence and trust that we place in our fellow team members. Will and Pam are both great buyers of comics, and we are all blessed that they have chosen to work at Mile High Comics!
My final item for today is a reminder that all of you who read this newsletter may take an extra 5% discount on all of the prices for
back issue comics and magazines
listed on our website. Simply type the codeword GIVEAWAY into the "Discount Code" line on our order form, and our computer will automatically deduct that extra 5% for you on all qualifying items. While the GIVEAWAY codeword discount cannot be taken on new comics and/or trade paperbacks, it does provide you with a tangible extra benefit on all of your back issues purchases for your continuing support of
Mile High Comics
(please keep in mind the codeword does not apply to trade paperbacks, hard covers, graphic novels, statues, or supplies). All of us at Mile High Comics thank you for allowing us to keep doing the job that we love so much!
Happy Collecting!
