Long "Blog" Post From Chuck

Howdy!

I drove my awesome wife, Nanette, in to Denver yesterday to spend some time working on cleaning up her desk at our Jason St. Mega-Store. When she is feeling better, Nanette reconciles our checkbook and pays our company bills, while also keeping and experienced eye on our overall company operations. Her recent fall (and subsequent broken wrist and cracked kneecap) have slowed her down, but she still insists on going in to the office at least once a week. Her being back at work proved a real blessing yesterday, as she helped to untangle several seemingly inexplicable accounting conundrums. Thank you, Nanette, for being so diligent, even when your hand is still hurting you (a lot). You are wonderful!

Nanette in the farm fields

As regards my own efforts for Mile High Comics, I spent half of my own past weekend chasing down over 100 new 4' LED shop lights from Harbor Freight. We use these lights in Jason St. to light up our showcases filled with toys and cards, but our previous generation of lights (mostly purchased five years ago) have started to fail us. These newer ones are cheaper, brighter, and linkable into runs of eight, an improvement which has all but eliminated our need to use extension cords. Sadly, however, Harbor Freight's online store had a notation last week that these awesome new lights are already on "clearance," so I hustled my butters to get more before they (presumably?) become unavailable.

The good news is that these new LED lights are identical to those that I utilize on top of my 82 showcases that comprise my Pueblo Treasures Museum, so I purchased replacements for those older lights, too. Installing them will be a very slow process, however, as I have to laboriously disassemble and clean the top of each showcase before installing the new lights. With most of my working days being spent at my beloved Jay Hill Farm right now, that means it will probably take me at least a month to get all of my new lights in place. Sigh.

ARCHIE HORROR PRESENTS: CURSED LIBRARY FCBD (2023) #1

In other news from the comics world, Archie Comics revealed their first Transgender character yesterday. She plays a relatively minor role in the overall scheme of things in the Archie universe, but her inclusion is a testimonial to Archie's continued (and unrelenting) commitment to diversity, which is much appreciated in these times when it has become disturbingly common for so many profoundly nasty people to voice their homophobic and transphobic hatreds. Given that I personally identify as Transgender/gender fluid, I take great comfort in seeing that the courage to stand up for our oppressed minority still exists within the world of comics.

All of the above having been said, I want you to know that I bid farewell to a long-time Mile High Comics client yesterday after he demanded that I change the focus of my newsletters from a personal "blog" (his term) and to instead report purely about comics news. I harbor no particular antipathy toward this person, but his accompanying threat to stop purchasing from us if I didn't change my prose to suit his needs, was more than reason enough for me to decide to (forever) part ways.

CHILLING ADVENTURES PRESENTS: JINX - A CURSED LIFE

To be totally succinct, no one should ever have the temerity to try to coerce me into doing anything. And, I do mean anything. Forty-nine long years ago, I voluntarily gave up a full scholarship to college and chose instead to live in a beat-up old 1963 Chevy Impala for four months. Why? Because I absolutely and categorically wanted to be free of the dominion of others. My scholarship (ROTC) was from the United States Army, and if I continued past that two-year point, I would have been committed to a six-year stretch of active duty service, beginning as a 2nd Lieutenant. Blessedly, my two years of previous ROTC service had taught me that my continuing in the army would have been a total disaster, as I am viscerally incapable of following orders with which I disagree. At best, I would have eventually been thrown out of the army. At worst, I would have ended up in the Army's prison at Ft. Leavenworth. Neither was an outcome to which I looked forward.

My alternative to staying in the army was to sleep in that beat-up old Chevy (borrowed from my mother) for four months, while traveling around the country to 11 comic book conventions. After the last show (San Diego - 1974) I had managed to save $800, which I used to open the very first Mile High Comics retail store on September 30, 1974. It was located in a converted coal storage room in the back basement of an old 1800's bank building, in downtown Boulder, Colorado. I took in $100 on that first day, and the rest is now (as they say...) history.

1963 Chevy Impala

I mention my own ancient comics history specifically to highlight my monomaniacal bent toward always maintaining my person freedoms. I most certainly did not choose to live in that old car (subsisting on unheated cans of dented food that I bought in the supermarket closeout carts with food stamps) because I thought that I would ever get rich selling old comic books. Rather, my primary motivation was to be truly free from the dominion of others. Truth be told, my selling old comic books was initially but a means to an end. If being free meant living in poverty for the rest of my life, then so be it.

Well, as we all know by now, I was incredibly fortunate to become a comic book dealer in 1974. Through sheer happenstance, I found myself at the leading edge of an immense comics industry growth boom, one which led directly into a life filled with innumerable insanely fun adventures, and (in total) over a quarter of a billion dollars in sales. By abandoning the "safe" route, I actually came out great. But, within the context of all of those blessings, it is important to also realize that I would have done it all even if the recompense would have been nothing more than my own personal freedom. Really and truly, freedom means that much to me.

All-Ages Drag Show Performers

Anyhoo, if anyone else dislikes my prose (or politics) so much that they want to leave, there is a very functional "opt out" option at the end of each of my newsletters. There is no need to send me a personal screed threatening me with the loss of your patronage. Just opt out. But, do bear in mind that I lost about 10,000 longtime clients when I came out as Transgender/gender fluid four years ago, and (most especially) after I allowed the Gay and Transgender youth of Denver to enjoy being in monthly all-ages drag shows in our Jason St. building. I survived the economic loss of those 10,000 long-time clients just fine, so seeking to "punish" me through your departure is most likely not going to result in a material impact on me, nearly as much as it is on you. As with most things, our agreeing to sometimes disagree is still, by far, the most constructive solution.

Segueing back to the topic of my beloved Jay Hill Farm, after we first purchased our 1.4 million square feet of land in 1990, I quickly came to realize that I needed a tractor, and a whole lot of other mechanized tools, to maintain our 32 acres. This necessitated my not only attending farm auctions, but also establishing working relationships with people with critical skills (welding, fence-building, plowing, etc.) who would be willing to help me. Establishing those relationships was hard, as when I first became a part of the east Boulder farming community I was met with disdain (if not outright hostility), as I was perceived as not being one of "them."

Chuck and Nanette with some from the early years of farming

To be more specific, I was not an evangelical Christian, I was not politically conservative, I worked (mostly) in an office/warehouse rather than in the fields, and I most certainly had not grown up farming and/or ranching. Worse yet, I was (in their eyes) most likely a dilettante, one of them new-fangled organic "hippie" farmers who would never bear up under the relentless burdens and tribulations of running a farm.

Well, thirty-three years later, I'm still here (as are dozens of other newly-minted organic "hippie" farmers), and those crusty old farts are now all gone; either dead, or driven out by Boulder County's relentless escalation in property values. Before they left, however, we did eventually reach a point of mutual respect. Political and religious differences aside, I came to truly value and cherish those men for their incredible work ethic and skills, and their dedication to their families and to our wonderful country. Salt-of-the-earth does not begin to describe those amazingly stalwart individuals who tilled the soil and welded the machines from sun-up, to sun-down. They truly did (and many still do) form the solid backbone of America.

Chuck in the farm fields

On the flip side, I earned a lot of respect by never giving up (letting everyone see you continue plowing in a bitterly cold spring snowstorm earns you a lot of respect) and by eventually producing some truly amazing vegetables out of the stone/clay topsoil of our overgrazed farm. Sadly my life in the farming world all came to an end for me after my 2nd bout of West Nile Fever-induced encephalitis of the hypothalamus incapacitated me for three years, beginning in 2007.

For the 17 years that it lasted, however, my life within that ultra-conservative farming community was great. Those people whom I worked with were most certainly never my "friends," but we found enough mutualities to be able to co-exist within the same sphere, without ever (ever!) coming into conflict. We politely respected each other's divergent perspectives, kept our mouths shut about our differences, and all prospered as a result. Maybe, just maybe, that might be a partial solution to the bitter partisanship that has riven our national fabric. It's but a thought that springs to mind....

Well, that's it for today. I'll close, as I always do, by quickly mentioning that our 50% off BARGAINS! codeword remains in effect for you on all ten million-plus back issues listed for you on our website. Only newer issues, a few variants and restored comics, and our professionally-graded comics are exempt. Just plug the codeword into the box provided at checkout, and our computer will slash in half all qualifying items, which includes almost all of the newly-arrived items listed for you below. Will and Pam have been going crazy with buying collections, so there truly are some fun new arrivals.

Happy collecting!
