Mile High Comics News Update

Howdy!

I am having a hard time keeping track, but I think that today will be my 37th day in a row of working at Mile High Comics. hile it would have been nice to be able to rest at home, I instead spent this past weekend working alone in our cavernous Jason St. Mega-Store, sorting 5,000 Marvel and DC single issues into 125 awesome “Mystery Box” lots for shipment today to homebound fans all around America. Once I finish this newsletter, I will spend the rest of my day today (Monday) constructing 50 All-Ages boxes, and then 20 more Dark Horse collections. That will be enough to fill our “Mystery Box” orders for one day, but tomorrow I will need to create even more.

Chuck getting the Marvel Mystery Boxes ready

I wish that could go faster with my sorting, but that just cannot be done without sacrificing quality and diversity, which I simply cannot abide. I know full and well that a startling high number of comics fans are relying upon us right now to send them a broad spectrum of great comics at bargain prices, so I am personally committed to keeping that promise, even if it means my working every day. On a side note, the good news for those of you reordering boxes is that my stock of all of my initial title selections are now exhausted, so the boxes that I am now constructing are totally different from the initial batches. The reviews being posted online about my boxes are all effusively positive, which I appreciate very much.

In case you are wondering, I am (mostly) building our “Mystery Boxes” all by myself because the rest of our skeleton crew of Mile High Comics volunteers are totally focused on pulling, packing, and shipping all of the single issue orders that we have received over the past two weeks. Truth be told, as if this morning we are two weeks behind, primarily because this really has been a perfect storm of steeply increasing demand meeting dramatically reduced staffing. The good news is that Mario and the rest of our N.I.C.E. new comics subscription team shipped the very last of their standing new comics orders on Friday, so they will now be able to help our back issues team to catch up. If you are waiting in a confirmation that your order has shipped, please be patient. Your patronage is greatly appreciated.

In other news, I made the commitment on Friday for us to advance purchase 8,000 of our custom-made comic book shipping boxes. We typically have been able to order just 1,000 at a time as needed, but our primary box supplier ran out two weeks ago, and was unwilling to commit to the required 10,000 unit order from the mill. Rather than see our operations crippled by a lack of boxes, I stepped up with a commitment for 8,000 units, prepaying 25% of the total cost. Our boxes cost nearly $1 each, so this was a significant commitment in our part to keep shipping as long as we possibly can.

Another substantial financial commitment that I just made on your behalf on Friday was to order 50,000 more comic book bags. I am well aware that being home bound has allowed many fans the time to bag and board their collections, but that supplies are running short all around the nation. While a few domestic sources are still available, many critical comic book supplies are actually sourced from China. I seriously question if those supply chains even exist today, or if they do, how stable they might be. I figure that it is far better to possibly over-order a bit today, than to be totally out of stock for months. Just saying...

Cambridge protecting our inventory

I will close today’s newsletter with a sincere “Thank You!” to everyone who has supported us over the past few years. Thanks to your kindness and patronage, I have been able to successfully fund Will, Pam, and Lisa’s seemingly unending purchasing of comics and toys collections from fans here at Jason St. Our continuing to buy even more vast numbers of boxes filled with comics and books when we already had a mountain of unsorted issues seemed remarkably foolish to many, but now that all sources of new issues have shut down, our immense backstock inventory of 10,000,000+ comics and books is precisely what is keeping us afloat. Thank you!

Happy collecting!

P.S. In the back of Jason St. I have stashed half a pallet of beautiful hardbound collections of awesome early Disney stories created about 15 years ago by my dear friend, Bruce Hamilton, of Gladstone Publishing. These very limited hardback books were limited to only 1,000 copies of each, worldwide. When Gladstone liquidated after Bruce’s passing, I purchased a skid of these awesome hardback books, and put them away (as I am wont to do...) for a rainy day. Well, with so many young people now trapped at home with nothing to read, I am going to offer you copies of these amazing hardbacks for $39.95 each, or 3/$99.95, postage paid. I wish that I could make them even cheaper for you, but they are really heavy, so the shipping will eat up a lot of the cost. Enjoy!
