More Silver and Bronze Age Comics Plus Chuck's Health Update
Howdy!
I engaged in a mild moment of blowing my nose on Monday evening, and suddenly experienced
a stab of excruciating pain as something "popped" in my left rib cage. After that initial moment
of agony subsided, however, I felt somehow newly unburdened, and the constancy of pain in my
ribs began to slowly abate. Within 24 hours, my ribs once again felt nearly normal, and I stopped
taking my pain medication (Tylenol), seemingly without any negative consequences. Suffice it to
say, after sixteen days of non-stop rib pain, having this problem suddenly disappear was a blessed
relief.

I wish that I could say the same about my post-concussive brain fog, but that affliction is still
with me. It does seem to be very slowly abating, however, so I went ahead and booked myself on to a
flight at the end of next week for south Florida, where I will be attending the annual
Harvey Milk awards dinner.
After I return from Florida, I hope to be able to lay back and continue to heal for another couple of
weeks, and then drive to the 50th Coronation of our awesome
Sacramento Imperial Court
in mid-April. I'll be driving to that event (in great measure) because Pam is chomping at the bit to
head back to the Los Angeles toy district, and to fill my poor old minivan with yet another truckload
of Manga and Anime' toys and memorabilia. The last batch of goodies that she purchased in LA are already
about half gone, so restocking before the craziness of
Free Comic Book Day
(May 6th) is pretty much imperative.

Truth be told, another reason for my attending Florida and Sacramento is that those of us who are in the
forefront of America's Transgender and Drag world are feeling and inordinate amount of pressure right now
to raise our public profiles. It should come as no surprise to anyone that Transphobic and Homophobic laws
are being pushed in a large number of state legislatures these days, many with a disturbing degree of
success. There are already several states that have sought to criminalized me (specifically for reading
stories to children while in drag) and all other drag performers who interact with kids, and that have
passed draconian laws limiting the rights of Transgender people (and most especially Transgender children)
to receive gender-affirming healthcare, and also access to public spaces and sports activities that
comport with their gender identity.

This crushing of the civil rights of a small group of people is unacceptable in any free society, and those
of us who are leaders in the LGBTQ movement must stand up and resist NOW, regardless of our own personal
concerns, or physical limitations. Homophobic (and racist) attacks are already skyrocketing, with one of
my dear friends (who by coincidence is also a noted comics creator) having been viciously attacked in Portland
earlier this week. He is now recovering from a concussion similar to mine, though without the brain bleeding
that I experienced.

Simply put, there is (quite literally) a culture war taking place in America right now, and the casualties
are mounting. Sad to say, the cowardly and murderous attack on
Club Q
was but the opening foray in what I see as a concerted effort to destroy all LGBTQ participation in our national
dialog. If you doubt my word, consider for a moment that it is being projected that our right-leaning Supreme
Court majority is rumored to be about to uphold a "religious exemption" right to discriminate against LGBTQ
people, thus granting protected status to bigots who's religion states that our very existence is an abomination
against their god.

I do absolutely understand the argument for the right of everyone to express their own religious beliefs, as
this is America, where people are free to follow whichever religious creed or dogma seems best for them. But,
we also live in a nation founded upon secular laws that decree that none of us have the right to cause harm or
to discriminate against others. I think that we all can agree that if someone tried to claim a religious exemption
for being a discriminatory racist, that they would be laughed out of court. So why could it possibly be ruled OK
to discriminate against someone who is gay or Transgender? It isn't. That being the case, it is long past time that
those of us who truly stand for freedom stand up to these would-be totalitarian religious bigots who are seeking
to force their personal biases upon all of the rest of us. That, in a nutshell, is why I am refusing to simply
rest at home while recovering from my own concussion. Health considerations aside, I'll pay whatever price is
necessary to continue to fight for the cause of freedom for my brothers and sisters.
1941's Captain America Comics #1
As regards why my previous discourse could possibly be related to reading and collecting
comic books,
I would urge anyone questioning that premise to please take a look at 1941's Captain America #1.
Joe Simon
and
Jack Kirby
made that issue into the first openly anti-Nazi comic, and it was a huge hit, even though anti-Semitism was still
rife throughout America in those years, even to the point of infiltrating the Roosevelt administration. Comic books
have historically been, and continue to be, a medium that supports freedom and human rights for all peoples,
with
DC Comics
going so far as to place in-house ads in their 1960's comics advocating for tolerance and acceptance. LGBTQ
rights were not touched upon in those ads (as it was still a criminal offense in the 1960's to be gay or Transgender),
but the publishers has clearly shown in more modern times through the publication of hundreds of Pride-themed
comics, and through the creation of a plethora of gay and Transgender characters, that they support freedom
for all aspects of our awesome rainbow Community. I thank them for this outpouring of support with all my heart.

Mile High Comics,
it is pretty much more of the same. Will and Pam are absolutely killing it these days in buying collections, with
yesterday being a particularly crazy day. I watched as Will bought 500+
Silver Age
and
Bronze Age
comics in one deal, and about 30 CGC slabbed books in another. Pam purchased over 150 Funko Pop! Toys in two deals,
and then followed it up by buying a huge Disney memorabilia collection. Those were but a few of the dozen+ buys
they completed in just eight frenetic hours. Whew! Check out the awesome list at the end of today's newsletter

Ok, that's it for today. I am going to now entirely switch gears, and work for an hour on editing Chapter Eight
(out of twenty/four) of my first book ("A Child of No World") in my upcoming autobiographic graphic novel series.
My illustrator, the incredibly talented
Thomas Haller Buchanan,
has almost entirely recovered now from the dreadful
bout of leukemia that threatened his life last year, and is now eager for me to finish incorporating the many astute
suggestions of my dear friend,
Jim Shooter,
into my final text. Once Thomas has finished laying out those completed final pages, all we then need to do is to
somehow conjure (out of thin air) about $40,000 in printing costs. It's always something….
