GREEN LANTERN (1960) (#1-224) (DC) #85 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Green Lantern (1960) #85
Co-starring Green Arrow. "Snowbirds Don't Fly" is written by Denny O'Neil and drawn by Neal Adams. Comic book historians and popular culture observers point to this comic (along with Amazing Spider-Man #96) as marking a sea change in the way comics addressed troubling social issues of the day and a major move from the Silver Age into the Bronze Age of comics where more "relevant" and "mature" topics were courageously explored. Rather than focusing on robbery, murder or kidnapping, crimes that are easily understand and counter-acted, comic book authors like O'Neil knew that their costumed heroes needed to start focusing on real threats to society. In 1971, the biggest teen problem was heroin addiction.

After being mugged by three junkies, Green Arrow turns to his pal Green Lantern to help track down the culprits and stumbles upon a heroin distribution ring. Unbeknownst to the Emerald Archer, his ward Roy (Speedy) Harper has already fallen victim to the drug as he tries to cope with G.A.'s extended absences and lack of guidance. After an abortive attempt to shut the drug traffickers down, Arrow and the Lantern are themselves forced to inhale the narcotic and it's up to Speedy to save the day. But first he has to conquer his own inner demons! Then, enjoy a more traditional super-hero tale in a reprint from Green Lantern #11 titled "The Strange Trial of Green Lantern!" (written by John Broome and drawn by Gil Kane).
