How Chuck Lost Action Comics #1 and Marvel Comics #1...

Howdy!

I just got back from a small celebratory lunch at Hamburger Mary's, our local drag queen restaurant. I was there feeling really happy because 1) I had just been told that I was approved for a $2,200,000.00 refinance of our Jason St. building (which will drop our interest charges by $5,000/mo - woo!), and 2) I was approved for this huge sum of funding with our prospective new bankers being totally aware (as a result of first reviewing my Charles Rozanski Facebook page) that I am both openly gender fluid, and also perform as a drag queen.

This may not sound like a big deal, but not so long ago people like me were such social pariahs that we were subject to not only immense levels of hate-fueled vitriol and abuse, but also could be arrested by the police simply for appearing in public in what was deemed gender inappropriate dress. That was utter and complete BS in what is supposed to be a free country, but as the photo below (taken in NYC in the late-1960's) illustrates, being gender non-conforming was once a serious crime. That having been said, it makes me all the more proud to be helping to lead the vanguard of social acceptance for my Transgender and gender-nonconforming brothers and sisters today. Love is love.

Anyway, aside from just our new loan approval, it has truly been a great day. So you know, I awoke before dawn with a determination that I wanted to write the following little story for my 1,500 Facebook friends. Honestly, I think that you will really like reading it...

A little story about my losing ten million dollars. In January of 1977, I was blessed to discover the largest and most valuable collection of high grade 1930’s and 1940’s comic books in history. Included in that vast horde of 18,000+ (mostly) pristine comics were the very best surviving copies of 1938’s ACTION COMICS #1 (featuring the first appearance of Superman) and 1939’s MARVEL COMICS #1 (featuring the first appearance of the Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch). Those two legendary first appearances were among the key issues that I carefully locked away in the 5 enormous safe deposit boxes that I rented at the National State Bank of Boulder.

Action Comics #1

A conundrum that I had to deal with after finding that amazing collection was how to convert it’s potential value into long term assets. I had been offered an immediate cash payout (at a fraction of real value) by a couple of wealthy comics dealers, but chose instead to invest the proceeds into building my existing Mile High Comics chain. I soon thereafter traded some of the comics for another comics shop in Denver (our 4th Colorado location), and then made the decision to purchase the mail order division of a friend’s business in San Diego for $20,000, and move it to Boulder.

Marvel Comics #1

My little mail order business turned out to be a reasonably good investment, as it grossed about $50,000 in each of the first two years, and (more importantly) helped us to convert our overstock modern comics into cash. Everything changed in the summer of 1980, however, when I took the incredibly audacious risk of being the very first comic book dealer to ever purchase a double-page spread in ALL the June and July Marvel comics (about ten million issues), listing prices for all the back issue Marvels that we offered. My $22,000 (upfront) gamble resulted in our generating sales of $108,000, over just twelve weeks!

While that incredibly successful ad campaign did make us some money, retooling our entire operations on a crash basis to operate on that larger scale caused that seemingly limitless cornucopia of cash flow to evaporate almost immediately. One direct result was that I hired a bookkeeper/office manager to help us not only keep track of our funds, but also to track any possible customer service issues. This person opened the mail, made deposits, and then helped to reconcile our bank statements. They also wrote many of our payment checks.

Old Mega Store in Thorton

All of what I have just written should send up warning flags. As I learned the very hard way, you never, EVER, have the same person reconciling your books as is handling your money. As we discovered to our extreme dismay five years later, this person was opening our mail each day, creating the deposits, and then tearing up the original deposit slips (replacing them with blanks) on the way to the bank in order to steal all the cash that we received by mail every day. Because this person then reconciled our monthly bank statement, this pilferage went on for over five years.

When we finally (at the behest of the Boulder Police department) did conduct an audit comparing our records of cash received to deposits, we were appalled to discover that we were well over $60,000.00 in deficit. The actual total was probably quite a bit greater, but in the middle of our research Boulder DA Alex Hunter’s office cut a plea deal with our thief without our knowledge, obviating any benefit to us of further auditing. So we just gave up. Sigh.

While losing (at the very least) $60,000 to theft is devastating to any small business, what truly magnified our losses was, that to cover our monthly bills, I had no choice but to keep liquidating more and more of our windfall comics from that one incredible collection. Finally, I had no choice but to sell both the Action Comics #1 and the Marvel Comics #1, for about $25,000 each. While those forced sales did keep our company afloat, the opportunity cost in terms of future value appreciation was immense. The current owner has reportedly turned down a cash offer of $5,000,000.00 for just the Action #1, and the Marvel #1 could well sell in the same range. Other great comics were also liquidated at the same time, so my ultimate cost from just that one embezzlement easily exceeded ten million dollars.

You would think that I would be awash in bitterness after that huge burn, but I really am not. I picked myself up afterwards, and began innovating. I sold all my 1980’s retail stores in leveraged deals that then allowed me to borrow enough working capital to vastly expand our mail order business, and eventually convert it into our website. I then opened eight new stores in Colorado and California, before deciding to consolidate everything I own into our one giant 65,000 location in Denver. I now own well over ten million old comics and books, which

RED RAVEN #1

I will close this story by mentioning that I covered the 2011 down payment on my beautiful Denver building through the proceeds derived from selling the last 30 comic books that I owned from the 1977 collection, including my personal favorite, RED RAVEN #1. Because Denver’s commercial building market has since gone truly crazy (since pot was legalized), my acquisition has appreciated in value nearly enough to cover my losses from the embezzlement. The lesson to be learned is that time, and the blessings of Providence, can heal all wounds. Love is love.

The empty Jason Street Mega Store almost 9 years ago.

OK, that's it for today. Honestly, I am feeling totally worn out, again. For whatever reason, I am just not springing back from my latest debilitating West Nile episode (on Christmas Eve) anywhere near as quickly as I did in the past. That being the case, I am going to chill with my friends at my weekly poker tournament for a little while tonight, and then head home early. I was just reappointed as Imperial Crown Princess of the International Imperial Court System, so I have to get myself healthy ASAP. Starting in February, I will be required to represent at three major Coronations (San Diego, Seattle, and San Francisco) over three consecutive weekends. Fingers crossed that my good health returns...

Happy collecting!
