Half Price Graphic Novels Sale Ends Monday Howdy! Our inventory manager, Pam Brandle, sent me a summary yesterday that we added 206,393 comics and 19,139 books into our website inventory for you during calendar year 2019. While those numbers are certainly quite large, and far exceed what anyone else in the comics biz is accomplishing, they are still a little disappointing to me. Simply put, we added 249,000 comics in 2018, which was actually down from the 300,000 that we added in 2017. So, our trend is definitely not headed in the right direction. Pam Brandle Just to be clear, however, all is definitely not bad news. The reason for our decline in entry work is the explosion in demand at our "Help Desk" in Jason St. Truth be told, our sales in our Mega-Store have essentially doubled over the past two years, with the biggest driver of our sales growth being our searches by our staff in our limited-access back issue files for specific items being sought by our clients visiting Jason St. The good news is that those searches oftentimes yield over $1,000+/day in added store sales, the bad news is that they divert much-needed labor from sorting and grading collections. I do not (yet) know the answer to resolving this conundrum, but I am working on finding solutions. Brian at the Comics Help Desk A second bit of good news is that the number of books that we are adding each week has quintupled since Trish (at first...) and then Frank Romero began actively staffing our newly-created books "Help Desk" in August. Trish has since shifted over to helping Chris Boyd work down our backlog of 50,000 cover scans (both books and comics) that need to be added to our website, while Frank is forging ahead with adding a minimum of 1,000 graphic novels, trade paperbacks, and comics-related hardbacks into our website for you each and every week. That having been said, we do still have well over 10,000 books from all publishers and time periods stacked up in storage all around Jason St., so it is going to take Frank at least through May to even come close to catching up. Probably longer... Frank at the Books Help Desk As regards our missing cover scans, they are currently being uploaded by Trish to our website at the rate of 1,000-1,200 per week. At the present time we are concentrating only on uploading covers that Chris had previously scanned, but soon we will be running computer programs to identify the many thousands of items where we have a copy (or copies) available for sale on our website, but no cover scan. I consider this to be our single most important project of the year, so you can expect major improvements over the next twelve months. In addition to our efforts to improve the content of our online store, we are also still very committed to improving our internal "Search" capability. This has been a huge problem for us over the years, as our original operating system was designed to handle 1/10th of the number of variables currently in our database. With over one million items already listed in our database, designing faster and easier search parameters is critical for everyone. Progress will definitely be made. Jason St. Mega-Store On a side note, our Jason St. Mega-Store is performing quite well for us right now, with our gross sales for the first couple of days of 2020 already up 50% over those same days last year. Comics and books continue to sell briskly, but the immense number of vintage toys, action figures, Funko Pop!, and statues that we added last year created our fastest growth area. I am proud to report that Jason's gross sales for 2019 set an all-time record for any Mile High Comics retail location in our 50-year history!
