Comics and Toy Auction Tomorrow

Howdy!

It is still drizzling heavily here in Boulder this morning, but the weather folks are promising us a sunny day on Saturday. That makes me very happy, as we will be hosting our first Jason St. Mega-Store no-minimum-bid comics and toy auction tomorrow in four months. If you have not yet reviewed the photos of the 300+ auction items on our Mile High Comics Facebook page, I highly recommend that you do so. We are going to have a fun auction tomorrow!

While our auction will officially begin at 11:30 AM, we will be taking a pause in the sale of our own items at noon, so that we can quickly auction off about 30 lots of items that we will be selling to benefit the Denver Children's Advocacy Center, a wonderful local organization that helps children to recover who have been sexually abused, or have been involved in other kinds of violent crimes. Mile High Comics is donating most of the original art, sketch covers, and books that will be sold to help the kids served by the DCAC, but we are also accepting donations of items to be added to the auction. Lisa Wooley already brought in a wonderful signed CROW sketch to donate to the DCAC, so I already know that the benefit portion of our auction will be very exciting.

As an aside, I did allow our auction co-ordinator, Will Moulton, to include a very cool painting by award-winning comics artist Howard Chaykin (BLACK KISS, AMERICAN FLAGG!, STAR WARS, etc.) in the benefit portion of the auction. I believe that Howard created this painting during the early part of his career, when he was a very prolific contributor to comics fanzines. I am personally an avid collector of old fanzines, so I am going to start the bidding on this painting at $300. I will not, however, bid above anyone else who exceeds that amount, so if you would like to add a very cool painting by a major comics artist into your own collection at a bargain price, this is your chance. I would estimate market on this Howard Chaykin painting right now to be in the range of $800 - $1,200.

I will close today's newsletter by quickly mentioning again that we are are seeking folks right to work with us with expanding Jason Street's new "Ocean of Comics." We have eight folks already signed up to help us for $10/hour in store credit, but the job of sorting and repricing 300,000+ back issues is so immense that we could definitely use more help. The $10/hour in store credit we are offering can be used for back issues, new comics, trade paperbacks and hardbacks, or even in the auction. Also, extensive comics knowledge is not required, as we have a variety of tasks that need to be accomplished that are time-consuming (such as removing old price stickers, so that we can relabel...) but require no special skills. If you might have some hours that you can contribute to helping us, just stop by Jason St. on any day, and let the clerk at the front counter know that you have come in to work. We have several of our staff who can help you to get started immediately.

Happy Collecting!
