Princess Leia #2 Arriving

Howdy!

Having just turned 60, I have been spending quite a bit of time in reflection over the past few days. In simplest terms, crossing over into your sixties means that you can only hope, at best, for another 20 years of good health and vitality. That being the case, it should come as no surprise to you that a great deal of my time has been spent in pondering how I want my lifelong love affair with the comics world to end.

Chuck - Jason Street Mega Store

Before I inadvertently give you the wrong impression, I want to assure you that I have no desire at all to leave the comics world. To my way of thinking, an incredibly pleasant retirement would be to just be able to do exactly what I am doing right now, but without the stresses that come of being endlessly in debt. I absolutely love coming in to our Jason St. store each day, and contributing to the team effort that we have underway to build the world's greatest comic book store. I also derive enormous joy in being able to help the incredibly talented team of comics professionals who labor each day to enhance our vast online database. If I have my way, the only way anyone will eventually separate me from my beloved Mile High Comics family is when I am stone, cold, dead.

One conclusion that I have reached during my reflections, however, is that my future ability to keep doing what I love entirely depends upon how well we are able to communicate the importance of our ongoing mission. Here in Denver, for example, we have achieved considerable success in drumming up support from our local fan community. A great many Colorado comics fans now understand that our building the world's largest comics store in the heart of Denver is not only good for them individually, but also a noteworthy achievement for the comics world as a whole. As a direct result, we are currently experiencing that steady growth in our sales that we absolutely need to keep funding even more improvements in the Mega-Store.

I wish that I could say that the same degree of growth was happening in our online comics business, but it is not. That is not to say that we are not growing, but rather that it has become very apparent to us that distressingly few comics fans truly understand (or value sufficiently) the good work that we are doing. Almost no one realizes, for example, that there is an enormous cost burden that we bear each week just to add into our online database all of the titles and cover scans from that week's new titles.

At the same time, we also expand our online database for you each week by dozens (if not hundreds) of small press titles that were overlooked in the past, and scan for everyone's benefit a seemingly endless number newly-discovered variant editions from older titles. It is the sum of that effort and those improvements that have combined to make our website the single most comprehensive comics listing on the Internet. I know this to be true, as I am currently editing a printed version of our database, and it runs approximately 16,000 pages. If I work very diligently, I will be done with my currently run of editing and correcting in three years time. Then, if my health allows, I will begin all over again, at the letter "A."

Before I move on from by birthday musings, I do want to mention that I honestly believe that no one has ever accomplished (either in terms of actual inventory or database listings) anything approaching what our team has built over the past 45 years here at Mile High Comics. I realize that my statement flies in the face of advertising that has been running of late claiming that certain online sellers have "The Web's Largest Comics Selection", or "The World's Largest Comics Website." To the best of my knowledge, those claims are utter nonsense. Just to be sure, however, I am going to start posting on YouTube next week videos that show not only the two million back issues that we have at our Jason St. Mega-Store, but also the six million that we have at 56th Ave., and the two million more comics that we have stashed away in long term storage. Filming those new videos will be fun!

Princess Leia #2 Mile High

Moving in to current events, our exclusive Mile High Comics variant edition of STAR WARS: PRINCESS LEIA #2 will release next Wednesday. We already have a substantial portion of our 3,000-copy limited print run pre-committed, so I strongly suggest that those of you who wish to own a copy of this fun new title to place an order with us right away. If demand continues, our $24.95 initial release price may not hold for long. STAR WARS: PRINCESS LEIA is currently scheduled as a 5-issue mini-series, and we have contracted with Gabriele Dell'Otto to create Mile High Comics variant covers for each one. To pre-order issues of STAR WARS: PRINCESS LEIA #3-#5 at only $19.95 each, please contact Greg or Mario in our new comics subscription department. They can be reached by e-mail at nice@milehighcomics.com, or by phone (weekdays 9-5) at 303-455-2659.

On a related note, we will be producing exclusive Mile High Comics limited edition variants of SECRET WARS #1-#8. The phones in our subscription department have been ringing non-stop today, so I know that Greg has been signing up dozens of people for that exciting new Marvel series that will begin releasing in the first week in May. Our Mile High Comics print runs will also be limited to only 3,000 copies on our SECRET WARS issues, so we do not expect them to remain at our current $19.95 pre-order price for very long. There is a limit of three copies per subscriber, please. All other considerations aside, SECRET WARS will be the largest and most extensive Marvel crossover series in history...

A couple of quick closing notes. First, we were supposed to be exhibiting at the wonderful PLANET COMIC-CON convention in Kansas City is weekend, but ran into dreadful last-minute trucking problems that just could not be resolved. All of us here at Mile High Comics send our sincere best wishes to PLANET COMIC-CON organizer, Chris Jackson, for a very successful show.

Second, a new 50% off 45YEARS! codeword sale begins tomorrow. This half price comics sale includes all of our back issue comics and magazines, excluding only new issues, a few variants, and our CGC-graded comics. Almost all of our books are still priced for you at 30%-40% off, right on our website. You can combine books and comics together in a single order to achieve our free shipping levels of $40 for on Domestic orders, and $100 for most International destinations.

Happy Collecting!

P.S. Below are our current prices on all of the STAR WARS comics released by Marvel to this point. These prices will be revised on Tuesday morning, so I strongly urge you to fill in your collection as soon as possible. As I have stated several times before, I personally believe that Marvel publishing STAR WARS is not just a case of an existing publisher acquiring a new licensed product. I am of the opinion that this is the dawn of an entirely new comics company, as many publishing decisions are being directed by the staff at LucasFilms. Marvel just happens to publish these new titles (for now?) because it is a sister company to LucasFilms, under the Disney umbrella. I expect BIG things from LucasFilms over the next five years...
