by Marshall Poe & Leland Purvis Brothers Owen and Amos Bennington are front and center of the fraught debate over slavery in the year 1856. Recently orphaned after their parents, vocal abolitionists, are killed, the two boys both feel driven to continue their parents' quest. However, each sees a different path to the desired end - Owen, the older of the two, begins to volunteer with Abraham Lincoln, believing that if Lincoln's political career succeeds, the country will go the right way. Younger brother Amos is filled with fire and joins up with violent abolitionist John Brown. The brothers encounter individual experiences on these two different sides of the issue, revealing to readers these less often described stages leading up to Lincoln's election and the start of the Civil War.
