If you don't want bad things to happen, the one place you don't go is into the woods after dark. Hansel and Gretel, Heather, Josh and Mike from Blair Witch and the inhabitants of M. Night Shaymalan's The Village all found out the hard way. It's these and other images from fairy tales, films and folklore that inhabit childhood nightmares. Rachel Cattle brings these fears out of the imagination and into the pages of The Darkness. This oversized, textless, soft pencil-illustrated, limited edition comic is printed on shiny, pearly paper, staple-bound, and comes in sticker-sealed see-thru plastic, sealed with a Day-Glo yellow circular decal showing a creature's foot. Rachel's drawings in this atmosphere-rich, 43-frame piece include bears and other hairy monsters, trees, a burning house, what seem to be ghosts, eerily empty speech bubbles and three panels devoted entirely to darkness to create the sense of menace and paranoia of being trapped in the forest.
