Star Wars Comics Mania Grows
Howdy!
On Friday, I sent out a newsletter featuring links to the 500+
Marvel Comics STAR WARS images
that we have been able to document over the past four years. Most of those cover images
were of extremely scarce STAR WARS variant editions, many with print runs of only a
minuscule 3,000-5,000 copies. As far as I know, our variants page is the most comprehensive
listing of back issue STAR WARS titles available on any comics retailer website, anywhere in the world.
STAR WARS (2015) (#1-75) (MARVEL) #1 (CAMPBELL)
In case you were wondering, I had Will Moulton and Chris Boyd arduously pull together
these rare images for you because (ever since the advent of the MADALORIAN series) the
collecting of
STAR WARS variants
has eclipsed all other comic book collecting genres for us, including the
Marvel
and
DC
universes.
If you doubt my representation, consider for a moment that (over the past two weeks) that
we have generated more overall revenue from STAR WARS back issues, than from ALL other
of our Marvel and DC back issue titles, combined. That kind of powerful surge in demand
for just one comics genre is truly unprecedented.
STAR WARS (2015) (#1-75) (MARVEL) #35 (MILE HIGH)
What may be of greater importance for you to know is that we believe that our situation is
unique. To the best of my knowledge, no other comics dealer is experiencing a similar surge
in STAR WARS back issues sales, as they simply do not own enough copies to feel any real impact.
In some regards, that shields them from a profound truth, as you can never truly measure the
magnitude of lost sales when you are out of stock. If our experience is any gauge, however,
collecting STAR WARS back issues has (practically overnight) become the single most popular
genre in all of comic book collecting.
STAR WARS (2015) (#1-75) (MARVEL) #26 (MILE HIGH)
That having been said, if you are seeking guidance as to which STAR WARS titles to purchase,
I honestly cannot say. Almost every title, from both
Marvel
and
Dark Horse,
is intensely popular right now, with that demand even crossing over into out-of-print STAR WARS
magazines, trade paperbacks, and comics hardbacks. Prices are escalating (almost literally)
overnight as a result, but even after we have repeatedly raised our listed prices, speculators
and resellers are continuing to buy copies from us in bulk, at least to the extent that we allow.
DARTH VADER (2015) #3
What I can point out right now is that the latest sales statistics that I have seen from the
ICV2 comics news website imply that current sales of the brand new Marvel STAR WARS titles remain
below 50,000 copies per month. When you consider that there are hundreds of millions (if not
billions...) of STAR WARS fans in the greater universe, those tiny print runs are beyond ridiculously
low. Truth be told, with 10 new STAR WARS streaming series already in production, I cannot envision
a single STAR WARS comics title that will not be in high demand in the future.
KANAN: LAST PADAWAN (STAR WARS) (2015) #1 (2ND PRINT)
As regards our own stock, I am going to be reevaluating our prices again this week, and posting our
latest revisions as an addendum to my Friday newsletter. Because I went totally crazy in buying
STAR WARS comics
five years ago, we do currently possess that largest inventory of STAR WARS back issues in the world.
If this past weekend is any indication, however, even my frenetic past purchases are not going to
prevent us from someday exhausting the last of our remaining stock on many titles. Once that last
braking mechanism is gone, heaven only knows where the market for STAR WARS back issues will go. There
are just too few copies extent to satisfy the worldwide demand. ‘Nuff said.
VADER DOWN (STAR WARS) (2015) #1 (MILE HIGH)
I will close with a quick reminder that our 40% off DECEMBER! codeword sale is still in effect for
you on all ten million+ of our
back issue comics,
excluding only new issues, a few variants, and our professionally-graded back issues. Our STAR WARS
variants are excluded from the codeword sale (as they have always been), but the 40% off discount
does still apply to most of our standard
STAR WARS listings.
Happy collecting!

P.S. Will Moulton purchased a CGC collection two years ago that contained a number of signed STAR WARS
variants. Below are 20 different from that collection, most of which we only have a single copy in
stock. If you have an interest, please order quickly, as these unique items cannot be replaced.
