Chuck's Latest Buying Adventures Howdy! I am in eastern Ohio this morning, awaiting news from Lynne as to whether I can transform the contents of my fully loaded Mile High Comics cargo van into pallets for shipment back to Denver. Getting my van emptied of the 20,000+ comics and toys that I have already purchased during my latest buying trip is critical to my moving forward, as I am now completely and totally out of room. A few of the limited edition sculptures from Colorado The concern that Lynne and I share, however, is that FedEx Freight may be too busy right now to handle LTL (less than truckload) shipments. That would leave me no choice but to immediately return to Denver, postponing all of my other scheduled East Coast home visits until after the holidays. My fingers are crossed that FedEx will allow me to unload (as I have done on all of my other buying trips), as the idea of driving 1,300 mile home with just a single van load is truly rather discouraging. A few more of the limited edition sculptures from Colorado The good news is that I have already been quite successful in my latest comics and toys buying efforts. On Friday (before I even left Denver!), I purchased the largest collection of Sideshow and XM limited edition sculptures in the 50-year history of Mile High Comics. It required two very full truckloads to haul all of those giant ceramic figures back to Jason St., and a complete reordering of our entire statues area will begin today in order to try to display them. All will (technically) be on sale, but at a combined retail price of approximately $70,000.00, we do not expect them to sell at all quickly. In the meantime, however, they will greatly enhance our visual displays in Jason St., which is really the primary reason why I invested so heavily to purchase them. One of the MUTT & JEFF comics from the Nebraska deal After I left Denver, I helped out a widow living in the hinterlands of western Nebraska. Her husband had been a longtime client of Mile High Comics, who a couple years before his passing had fulfilled his lifelong dream of opening his own comics shop. Like most neophyte store owners, however, he let himself be pillaged by canny local collectors, who took most of his key issues and popular titles, leaving him with a lot of bulk, and some high value comics that are typically very slow to sell. I would normally have passed on this kind of picked over accumulation, but this poor lady was in a truly difficult situation, as absolutely no one else would drive to the middle of nowhere in order to buy her husband's remaining inventory. Long story short, I calculated a typical buying price, and then added another 20% on top, just to help her out a bit more. Suffice it to say, she was very grateful that I drove the many miles to her small town, far out on the prairie, and then treated her so fairly. One of the CRIME & PUNISHMENT comics from the Nebraska deal My next stop was in Indianapolis, where Ryan, another longtime Mile High Comics client, was downsizing his collection in order to make more room in his house for his growing family. It was Ryan's collection that filled my cargo van to above 90% of capacity, as he had a remarkably large mass of comics, toys, Pop! figures, and hardback books waiting for me. I already know that Will and Pam will be delighted to receive Ryan's collection, as he has truly exquisite tastes! Some of the graded books we got from Pat Duyal Finally, I drove yesterday afternoon and evening to Youngstown, Ohio, where my good friend, Pat Duyal, owns Rainbow Comics. Rainbow is an old school “hole in the wall” comic book store, but still succeeds remarkably well because Pat is uncanny in his ability to find great back issues. He finds so many, in fact, that he always has a couple of long boxes filled with goodies waiting for me, that he sells me at a reasonable price. Even if he had nothing, however, I would still try to stop and visit with him, as he is one of the most knowledgeable comics dealers in America. Suffice it to say, our dinnertime conversations are wide-ranging, and filled with innumerable shared tidbits of inside information. Above all else, that is why I truly do love visiting Rainbow Comics. Some more of the graded books we got from Pat Duyal I have to go now, as Pat is waiting on me. We're going to have breakfast together at a local diner, while I wait to hear back from Lynne about FedEx. My presumption is that all will work out, and that I will be able to continue on this two-week comics-buying journey, so I am going to keep our 60% THANKSGIVING! codeword sale in effect for you through Wednesday. As per usually, those incredibly steep discounts apply to all of our back issue comics and magazines, excepting only new issues, a few variants, and our professionally-graded items.
