Howdy! I shared with you on Monday my observations that it seemed like over this past weekend in our Mega-Store that our shoppers were holding off on making purchases, waiting for us to pull the trigger on our annual BLACKFRIDAY sale.
Well, it now appears that in this instance I really nailed it, as from the minute that I made the news public on Monday afternoon that we were going to offer our back issues at 70% off, and all of our toys, statues, posters, etc. at 20% off, our sales absolutely blew up! Our online back issues sales increased by a staggering 1,000% (!) between Sunday evening and Monday evening, and our in-store revenues on Tuesday (typically our slowest day of the week...) ended up at more than double what we took in on Sunday. Yahoo! So you know, all of this frenetic Mile High Comics business took place in my absence, as I drove out to southeastern Kansas on Monday to look at a very large collection of older comics. While the seller and I were too far apart in price on this trip to close a deal for all of his comics, I ended up bringing back to Colorado about 1,000 of his very eclectic issues, and am still optimistic that we can work out a deal for the rest.
In case you are wondering, the problem with this seller's lifetime accumulation lies in that most of his collection consists of low-grade "reader" comics that are typically much slower to sell than the VF/NM gems that we obtain from other sellers. A lower transactional velocity potential leads directly to added costs for us, as we sometimes have to hold on to more obscure titles for upwards of ten years (or more) until we finally find them a new home. There is a cost to our having to hold inventory for a decade+, so that does have to be factored into the purchase price.
That having been said, I personally love these kinds of less popular 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's titles, so I generally pay considerably more for them than anyone else does. My Mile High Comics team (and my dear, sweet, loving bride, Nanette....) expect me to exercise some degree of fiscal discipline, however, and not squander our hard-earned working capital on slow-moving titles just because of my own personal nostalgia. Sigh. My fingers are crossed that we can find a middle ground that we will allow us to eventually reach a consensus that sends me back out to Kansas to bring home the seller's remaining 20,000 comics.
My only other bit of news for today is to urge you, if you haven't already, to place your 70% off BLACKFRIDAY codeword order with us as quickly as you can. Simply put, this is a very short duration 70% off sale, lasting only through next Tuesday. It applies to all ten million-plus back issues that we have in stock, excepting only newer releases, a few variants and restored comics, and our professionally-graded items. We already met (and auctually exceeded....) our low-end expectation for this sale on the very first night that it was in effect, so the odds of our extending it past Tuesday are quite low. We've added several thousand excellent back issues into our Premium New-In-Stock link of late, so there are some incredible deals available for those who act quickly. 'Nuff said.
Well, that's pretty much it on the news front today. Nanette, and I, will be spending Thanksgiving at our daughter, Rowan's, house tomorrow in nearby Arvada, where she, and her husband, Justin, will have some nice vegetarian options lined up for me. Before I head over there in the mid-afternoon, however, I will first drive in to Jason St. to feed our kitty, Cambridge. Our Mega-Store is closed on Thanksgiving, so I get to spend some time alone in our huge building, which I actually greatly enjoy.
