Chuck's Indian Market/Comic Book Market Report

Howdy!

After a six-hour drive yesterday from Santa Fe, I am delighted to report that I am back at my beloved Jay Hill Farm in Boulder this morning. That having been said, my annual early-to-mid August travels to New Mexico are typically both relaxing, and enlightening for me, with this year being no exception. I will seek to share with you today a few of my observations from my fun adventures, as I believe there is much to be learned about our awesome comic book world from what I experienced over the past couple of weeks.

Chuck and Jason Ebelacker in Santa Fe

I will begin today by noting that both the comic book and the Pueblo pottery collecting worlds are all about a seismic generational transition right now. Simply put, "boomers" are downsizing their lives (and entering assisted living facilities and cemeteries) in vast numbers these days. As a direct result, their accumulations of material objects are being dumped (oftentimes for pennies on the proverbial dollar) by heirs who are utterly indifferent to their forebear's obsessions. Simply put, these youthful iconoclasts just want their parent's accumulated "crap" to be gone, preferably as quickly as possible.

Truthfully, I find this kind of callous indifference to the past be profoundly disturbing. The seemingly visceral need of some people to tear apart the legacy of their parents in order to somehow forge their own identities is utterly baffling to me. At my core I am a linear-progression person, with a personality that values enhancing existing asset bases while simultaneously forging a new identity through my own personal achievements.

Chuck in Santa Fe

Thus, when I inherited what remained of my mother's once-extensive collection of European silver coins, I didn't immediately rush over to a coin dealer to liquidate them, but instead tucked them away in a very large (locked) strongbox. I do not go through them very frequently, but when I do, childhood memories flood back to me of sitting in a 2nd floor room filled with cigar smoke as elderly gentlemen from the Jackson, Michigan coin club jostled with each other to obtain rare numismatic treasures. I was only seven years old during those epic coin club meetings, but I remember them with great fondness as they were one of the very few occasions in my childhood when adults were kind to me.

Nostalgia aside, my mom's coins have done nothing but appreciate in value in the 24 years since her unexpected passing. There have certainly been ups and downs in the market for rare coins (and silver) during that quarter of a century, but much like the stock market, the trend lines (over time) for most coins have been inexorably upward. The same can be said for most antiques and collectibles, although those that take up the most space (such as large furniture) have clearly suffered as people's personal living space has declined in size. As a case in point, you oftentimes can buy beautiful older China cabinets on Craigslist here in Denver for $100 (or less), as the number of homes with sufficient space declines. Sadly, that is just the way the world is evolving these days.

Chuck in Santa Fe

Anyhoo, my personal opinions aside, the reality is that huge quantities of art and collectibles are being "re-homed" these days, and that trend is definitely affecting both prices, and availability. As a case in point, 97% of my purchasing budget for Pueblo pottery during my two trips to New Mexico this month was spent on older material, while only 3% was spent on (one) newly-created pot. That is a 30:1 ratio of old versus new! My own personal decision-making in that regard might be a bit extreme, but based upon what I was hearing from the artists at this past weekend's Santa Fe Indian Market, it has become more difficult for them to persuade collectors to buy new pots, when so many great older pots are out there at bargain prices. Newbies to the collecting world do still bite on expensive new creations, but most canny older collectors are doing much more in the way of shopping and comparing new releases with classics, and finding far better value in purchasing items that are older.

In many regards, I have just defined our entire business model here at Mile High Comics. Fifteen years ago, we were shipping out (or selling in our retail stores) over three million dollars in new comics each year. Once cover prices exceeded $1.95 each, however, I became concerned that the publishers were creating a "death spiral" where unceasing cover price increases led to inexorable declines in print runs, thus necessitating even further cover price increases. Not a positive trend.

Stack of Funko Pop just purchased today

Another question in my mind has been as to whether 22-page periodical comics are worth $4-$5 each as entertainment? In most instances, I personally think not. Especially when there are upwards of two billion back issues extent that increasingly transact in the secondary market at far lower average prices. In a nutshell, that is why I repositioned us (beginning 15 years ago...) into being primarily back issue dealers, and vastly increased our available back issue supplies. It was a costly transition for us to undertake, but given where we are today, I am truly delighted to have walked away from most of that very costly new comics volume.

All of the above having been said, I want to share with you that our sales are up this year by double digits, while the reports that we are reading are that most comic book retailers are experiencing either a flat (or down) year. Yes, we have had to discount our back issues a bit more this year to keep them moving, but that's totally doable sacrifice for us to make because we have also been able to purchase collections for less as some boomer heirs give up their parent's lifetime accumulations for next to nothing. Our earnings remain small because of increases in labor costs and taxes, but I am proud to report that we remain firmly in the black. In these days of great tumult, we are (by far!) beating the proverbial curve in the comics world. Yay!

I will close today's report with a confession. Due in great measure to the vast numbers of old Pueblo pots that are currently flooding the market, I am keeping myself personally totally broke these days by spending like a drunken sailor on my pottery collection. I am impoverishing myself quite intentionally, however, because I am old enough to realize that these kinds of generational transitions are rare opportunities to pick up incredible treasures, oftentimes for only small fractions of their real worth. I believe the same is true of today's market for old comic books, which is why we are budgeting even more for collection acquisitions over this upcoming fall and winter. There is never a better time for building value into your collection than when legions of indifferent heirs are dumping lifetime accumulations for pennies. This may be but a temporary trend, but for right now I truly believe that most back issues are an amazingly great deal.

Happy collecting!

Auction on Saturday, August 24th

P.S. I forgot to mention two cogent points. First, our 60% off SUMMER! codeword sale remains in effect for you on all of our back issues. Only new issues, a few variants and restored comics, and our professionally-graded items are exempt. Second, our monthly no-minimum-bid auction of back issues and vintage toys will take place this Saturday commencing at 11:30 AM. Over 20% of our winning bids in our last auction came from fans who were not able to attend in person, but had Pam proxy bid for them instead. You can reach Pam by calling her (weekdays) at 303-455-2659, or by writing to her via Pamb@milehighcomics.com. 'Nuff said.
