Chuck's Back From NM With Expansion Plans

Howdy!

After a relaxing 11-day vacation spent in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Nanette and I are back home here in Colorado. It used to be that our late-summer return home was from the San Diego Comic-Con, but after we (finally) pulled out of that truly miserable show nine years ago, our return from Santa Fe has sufficed to mark (at least in our minds) the beginning of our new fiscal year.

In case you are wondering, our fiscal year is mostly predicated upon the beginning of the new school year. Simply put, we work our butters off all fall and winter making physical improvements to our Jason St. Mega-Store while also adding even further to our vast online inventory, all with a goal of setting us up for success during the critical 120-day season that runs from the first weekend in May (Free Comic Book Day) through the first Monday in September (Labor Day).

The good news for this year is that our wintertime efforts bore wonderful fruit, with our overall sales during our important summer tourist season up by approximately 30%. Given the negative impact of those higher gas prices which are currently plaguing us all, and the misery of grocery prices that just seem to never stop rising, any sort of gain in our revenues over last year would have been noteworthy. But, notching a staggering +30% gain over last year (which was our previous best year), is just over-the-top amazing.

To be fair, one obviously external factor that helped propel our sales upward over the past couple of weeks has been the new Spider-Man movie. We have not seen any sort of massive influx of people coming into the store (or ordering from us online) since the movie first broke, but the trend lines in our sales do show a very noticeable upward pattern. Collected editions of past Spider-Man stories seem especially brisk sellers right now, so the massive success of the film has clearly benefitted us.

So where do we go from here? Well, hanging out in Santa Fe always gives me a chance to step back and think about our future, and the #1 priority that I identified for 2027 will be for us to (again) expand our store displays, with a special emphasis on obtaining at least 100 more large upright showcases. I've tried to source those showcases via the secondary market here locally, but with only that one large score (30 cases) from 15 months ago proving viable. Sigh...

What this means is that I have no choice but to start saving our shekels, and to then order a full container of new cases from China. The last time that I looked, when you purchase in bulk the stripped down 6' tall cases are about $500 each (plus duties and shipping) which is about half of the new price from our local store fixture suppliers. The one big drawback is that these glass cases come as a knocked-down kit (flat on pallets), which then have to be assembled. That is definitely not a task that I am looking forward to in any way, but it appears to be the only economically viable pathway for us to follow..

All of the previous having been said, we absolutely do NOT currently have anywhere near the free space available in our Mega-Store for 100 more showcases (plus the additional showcases cases I am planning to order for a downstairs extension of my world-famous Pueblo Treasures Museum), so we are going to need to dispose of a great deal of the old fixtures, etc. that are currently clogging up our back warehouse areas, and then push back the walls. I do now have a rough plan of what we need to accomplish in order to bring these grandiose new dreams to fruition, but getting rid of my 50-year accumulations of random "stuff" has always been the hardest struggle for me, as I am in my heart a dedicated (obsessive) hoarder. Please wish me luck in our upcoming wintertime endeavor. I do believe that I'm going to need it...

That's it for today. I need to get back to unpacking some of my new pottery treasures from our New Mexico trip, and then trying to find space to shelve them.
