Chuck's Buying Even More Pueblo Pottery Howdy! I am in Santa Fe, New Mexico today, enjoying my annual summertime quest for more Pueblo pottery to add into my Pueblo Treasures Museum. As you are undoubtedly aware from my past newsletters, I spend an enormous amount of my time (and money) seeking to fill in the blanks in my museum's collection of pottery. What you may not know, however, is that my collection (at 12,000+ pieces) is now the largest reference source for Pueblo pottery in the entire world. There are some public museum collections out there that have large quantities of older (pre-1920) Pueblo potteries, but none come close to the comprehensive breadth of what I have put together on the (private) 2nd floor of the Mile High Comics Jason St. Mega-Store. Chuck with a late-1800’s blackware Santa Clara olla (water jar) I mention my potteries for a couple of different reasons. First, even though I now personally only collect a few limited genres of comic books (giveaways, Undergrounds, fanzines, etc.), my passion for collecting (in general) remains totally unsated, even after 55 years of my manic accumulating of material objects. The only difference from when I was 14 years old to today is that I now purposely avoid adding particularly popular comics into my own collection, as I want to be able to instead offer them to you. Simply put, by redirecting my personal collecting passions into pottery, I avoid what might otherwise be a profound conflict-of-interest as regards my commitment to serve your collecting needs. A second important aspect to my collecting Pueblo pottery is that my collection may end up being one of the last to be out on public display. To explain, Congress in 1990 wrote the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), a law which outlawed the desecration of Indigenous burials and required all the public museums and universities in America to return all of the excavated bones of Native American ancestors to their respective tribal nations. At the same time, museums and universities were asked in 1990 to inventory their collections of material objects (including all pottery) so that tribal nations could identify objects of "cultural patrimony" that were of a religious and/or communal nature, and thus should never have their their respective nations. 7" bird-form decanter from Acoma or Zuni Regrettably, a large number of museums and universities dragged their feet for 34 years (!), so an exasperated Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland (an enrolled member of Laguna Pueblo) issued a NAGPRA update this past February that totally flipped the requirements, making it a violation NAGPRA for any publicly funded entity in the United States to exhibit ANY object of tribal origin without first securing permission in writing from the tribal government. Yowza! Not surprisingly, museums all across America are suddenly finding the need to shutter their public displays of Native American art and artifacts for "renovation," tucking away in basement vaults vast numbers of tribal objects that in some instances have been on public display for over 100 years. When (and how) this incredible cluster is going to be resolved is anyone's guess, as neither the museums, nor the tribal entities, have the infrastructure in place to process thousands upon thousands of permission requests (per museum!) for objects acquired by museums as recently as this past January. Suffice it to say, however, that this sudden changing of the NAGPRA rules has thrown the entire public display of Pueblo pottery into total disarray nationwide. The new act also outlawed the export of tribal objects from America to any other country, so this have become incredibly weird (literally) overnight. Historic Peruvian Pottery bird Where I fit into all of this insanity is that the present rules totally exempt private collections from NAGPRA, just so long as no public funds were utilized in any way to fund the creation of the collection, or and subsequent museum. Since I have paid for everything that I own out of my own private funds, I am clearly exempt. That being the case, I can continue to offer private tours (by appointment, only) of my Pueblo Treasures Museum without violating NAGPRA. Suffice it to say, however, that things have gotten quite weird for the rest of the Native American world, with the irony being that I may end up being the last man standing with any Pueblo pottery on public display, at least until the permissions programs start to work for public museums and universities. How crazy is that? A sample of some of the comics added the past couple weeks. Anyhoo, that's how I have been spending my time this week.
