Chuck's Morgan Spurlock Story Howdy! I am happy to report today that our Memorial Day weekend here at Mile High Comics started out with a pleasant surge in business for us, both in our Jason St. Mega-Store, and also via our www.milehighcomics.com website. I don't have the exact numbers from the Mega-Store, but I'm guessing that we were up about 20% over last year, which at least keeps pace with the latest rise in our property taxes. Truthfully, that is all I ask. Chuck with Morgan Spurlock As regards our website, I think that we were up by a similar percentage, but for a while there orders were coming in so quickly that I lost track. Suffice it to say, however, that we sold a vast quantity of our "intentionally downgraded" comics. Given that many are now priced at below what we were asking for them over a decade ago, that really isn't much of a surprise. I am still quite grateful to everyone who ordered, however, as those funds will also help us to defray those darn taxes. Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope In other news, my dear friend and filmmaker, Morgan Spurlock, passed away last week. I worked with him 14 years ago, when we filmed the documentary "Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope," a celebration of all the positive energy and wackiness that goes down at each year's San Diego Conic-Con. I was one of the starring personalities in that fun little film, and it was awesome (but also truly exhausting...) for me to be filmed by his crew for three straight weeks. Morgan Spurlock with Ashley (Chuck's assistant) That having been said, it was only after filming was complete that I learned that I had specifically been cast to be the movie's "dinosaur." It turned out that, while Morgan loved Comic-Con as a frenetic social experience, he personally thought that paper comic books (and the people who sold them) were doomed to obsolescence in the very near future. He read all of his comics on his laptop, and was absolutely convinced that online distribution was the only viable future for graphic story-telling. Stan Lee and Morgan Spurlock My job, (which I unwittingly performed quite well in the film) was to represent the entire subculture of comic book fans and retailers who still loved (and sold) old comic books that were printed on paper. We were the "dead tree guys," and Morgan wanted to capture footage of us in the wild before we went extinct. Seriously, I got that explanation directly from Morgan's mouth. It totally blew my mind that this weird attribution was never mentioned to me in any way prior (or during) the filming, but I guess that they wanted to avoid in any way influencing my perspectives or reactions while shooting my spontaneous responses. Red Raven #1 Anyhoo, while I was (indeed) on the financial ropes during the entire time of the filming, and while much of my participation in the movie revolved around me trying to sell my copy of the ultra-rare Red Raven #1 for top dollar in order to help our financial situation at Mile High Comics, the reality was that (thanks to my being a relentless hoarder of old comic books...) that Mile High Comics was still quite asset-rich during that period, and that we also had an intensely loyal fan base. I just had to figure some things out as to how to expand our overall consumer base (which I did by purchasing the Jason St. building and then opening the Mega-Store in 2011), while simultaneously eliminating all of our long term corporate debt (which I accomplished in 2017 by selling our old headquarters building). These were exceptionally difficult financial maneuvers, but in the end, I made it all work. Morgan Spurlock and Aleta (Chuck's daughter) In the meantime, Morgan took his incredibly promising career as a film and TV producer and flushed it down the "Me, too" drain with some very ill-timed personal confessions. I really felt bad for him, as his transgressions (while both real and significant) would probably have not elicited much of any response during other periods, but in the passionate fervor of those "Me, too" days he immediately became an untouchable. It was all profoundly sad. Coming full circle back to today, I have now outlived Morgan even though he was 16 years younger than me, and Mile High Comics is now as strong financially as we have ever been in our entire existence. Yes, we do have to cover those ghastly property taxes each year, which is a real pain in the butters. At the same time, however, the Jason St. building (which I purchased from the sale of my Red Raven #1) is now only taxed at such a high amount because it is now appraised at over eight million (!) dollars. My mortgage on the building is only a small fraction of that amount, so if I were to ever want to close down Mile High Comics and retire, just the sale of our building would leave me far (far!) better off financially than I was during those dreadful Comic-Con filming days. Our inventory has also more than doubled since that film was shot, so I think it fair to say that we are doing quite well. Chuck outside Jason Street Mega-Store I guess the moral of this story is to not write off an entire industry just because technology has created some significant structural changes. Yes, new paper comic books are struggling these days, not the least of which because print runs are too low, and cover prices so darn high. Yet the number of new issues being published each month on the paper created from the proverbial "dead trees" is still quite significant, and back issue sales (at least for us) are on a truly robust upswing. Yay! Morgan Spurlock and Chuck Morgan Spurlock absolutely believed in his heart-of-hearts that our time in the comic book sun was over, but sometimes, occasionally, the dinosaurs do win.
