Chuck's Grandson Graduates

Howdy!

We had a strange flip in our revenues at our Jason St. Mega-Store over this past weekend, with our normally robust Saturday being eerily quiet, and our normally relaxed Sunday turning positively frenetic. Why? As best as we can surmise, because of graduation ceremonies. On Saturday a great many people (myself included) spent the day sitting in high school stadium bleachers, listening to the speakers voice platitudes about always staying positive and battling to create a change the world. On Sunday, those same people (and their newly-enriched graduates) flocked to Jason St. to invest their graduation money in comics and collectibles. That sage economic strategy most certainly worked for me, so I applaud their foresight.

Chuck and Austin

In case you are wondering, I was at the Boulder High School graduation ceremony to celebrate the successes of my grandson, Austin Evans. Austin is the son of my daughter, Rowan, and her husband, Justin Ehardt. I was honored to be adopted as Austin's grandparent when he moved in with us about six years ago to begin attending classes in our Boulder Valley School District. Austin still spends summers and holidays with his birth mother, Amber Meyers, in central Kansas, but for most of the year he lives with us at Jay Hill Farm.

On a side note, one reason why Austin attended Boulder Valley public schools is that he began transitioning soon after entering high school. While central Kansas has many beautiful aspects, Transgender acceptance (sadly) does not rank high among them. In Boulder, being Transgender is essentially no big deal, so Austin's acceptance level here has been quite high, with relatively few hiccups.

This is the exact spot where Dr. Martin Luther King stood when he gave his "I have a dream" speech. Chuck outside the Lincoln Memorial, in Washington D.C.

I am mentioning Austin's four-year transition journey because I wish to share that my own efforts in advocating for the civil rights of Transgender children and their parents are not based upon hypotheticals. In addition to the antipathies that I myself have personally experienced since coming out as Transgender/Gender-fluid, I have watched Austin navigate the innumerable minefields that plague young people who seek gender-affirming health care. Suffice it to say, Austin has had minimal support from his Kansas-based health care providers.

With Transphobia having of late become America's most virulent "hatred du jour," I cannot but to imagine the pain and suffering that is now being inflicted upon gender-dysphoric innocents who are not blessed to live in progressive enclaves. Truly, it is a national disgrace that so much overt hatred and oppression against our Transgender children is openly tolerated within what is supposed to be the home of the brave, and the land of the free.

In a more positive outcome, as a direct result of the fact that Austin has been blessed to navigate his personal journey with minimal interference, he has become much happier, and remarkably more successful. After struggling academically while in junior high, Austin graduated on Saturday morning with excellent grades, and will be attending one of our local Community Colleges this fall. Suffice it to say, I am over-the-moon proud of him, and consider myself blessed to have been allowed to be one of his adopted grandparents. Good luck to you, Austin! You truly deserve nothing but the best.

Returning to the subject of comics and collecting, I am beginning my return to work today after four weeks spent helping my wife, Nanette, manage around the house after she suffered a broken wrist, and cracked kneecap, in a fall in our home. Nanette's wrist is still bothering her, and her kneecap still aches at times, but she's also going a bit stir-crazy after being stuck at home for so long. We won't be in the office for more than a couple of hours today, but hey, it's a start.

SHOWCASE (1956) (#1-104) (SHOWCASE PRESENTS...) (DC) #36

My first task today will be totally reorganizing my comics-sorting area. Will and Pam finally worked through my entire backlog of comics that I had selected last winter for "intentional downgrading," so I need to recommence my sorting ASAP. The good news is that Will and Pam have both been buying collections in Jason St. with great rapidity, so I have plenty of long boxes to peruse. Woo!

Before I go, I do want to highlight the incredible effort that Will and Pam have put in recent days into adding great comics into our online inventory for you. The collections that they have been buying of late span the entire history of comics, from 1940's Golden Age issues, all the way up to comics published just within the past couple of months. Regardless of their age (or scarcity) Will and Pam grade them all, and thus improve our overall selections every single day. If you doubt my word, just click on this link to our combined past two-week Premium New-In-Stock link. I think that you will be truly amazed.

BEWITCHED (1965) #1

That's it for today. I will close with a quick reminder that our 50% off BARGAINS! codeword sale remains in effect for you on all ten million-plus back issue comics and magazines listed for you on our website. Only newer issues, a few variants, and our professionally-graded items are exempt. Enjoy!

Happy collecting!
