Free Comic Book Day News Howdy! I am pleased to announce this morning that we all survived Free Comic Book Day. Wahoo! This may seem like a somewhat overly-enthusiastic emotional response on my part, but believe me when I say that it is not. Our having to plan out the logistics required to successfully serve thousands upon thousands of excited people during a mere nine-hour window of opportunity, is actually quite challenging for us, and fraught with innumerable potential pitfalls. For at least this year, however, none of those perils manifested, so we made it through totally unscathed. Yay! FCBD giveaway counter One factor that helped us a lot (at least in my estimation) in easing the crowding that typically accompanies FCBD is that we did not have a guest creator signing autographs this year. While I greatly enjoyed having Roy Thomas visit us during FCBD last year, the added demand created by his appearance put a substantial strain upon all of us. The costs of Roy's appearance also used up all of our earnings from the entire event, making us all question as to what in the heck were we thinking?!? Providing guests for our fans is certainly important at times, but having them visit on FCBD? Maybe not... FCBD in the Jason Street Mega Store Anyhoo, we truly kicked butters this year. We had 30-40?(maybe 50...) people waiting to get in when we opened at 9 AM, but what was really significant was that they were dedicated fans, not the drive-by grabbers who rush from store to store on FCBD only seeking the freebies, and not supporting the stores in the slightest. Our in-store crowd built to 150-200 people in the store by 10 AM, and stayed steady at a couple of hundred people (with people constantly leaving, but more arriving) until we closed at 6 PM. I am guesstimating that (in total) that about 4,000 fans attended this year's Jason St. Mega-Store event. Even Spider-man came by for a visit Where the contrast with last year was really profound, was in the fact that our attendees this year seemed equally focused on getting lots of the FCBD variants, but were also more than willing to actually spend a little in the store in order to get them. We gave out one additional FCBD variant (above and beyond the three free that we allowed everyone with no obligation) for each $10 spent in the store. That proved to be a winning incentive, as it helped us to make FCBD 2023 slightly profitable for us, as opposed to last year, when we actually lost money. It was not a big win, but after so many years of losing, I'll take it! Toy Section on FCBD As regards my own participation in this year's FCBD, it was limited to a few cameo appearances during the morning. I was actually at the Mega-Store before we opened, and stayed until 1 PM, but my tummy was still being upset from the antibiotic that I am taking after my oral surgery of last week. That being the case, I mostly worked up in my Pueblo Treasures gallery during the event, leaving our operations in the very capable hands of our general manager, Will Moulton, and his incredible team of professionals. I checked up on how things were going several times, but they were progressing so smoothly that I felt absolutely no need to stay past 1 PM. The Mandalorian also stopped by Now that FCBD is behind us, what comes next is our crazy busy summer tourist season. Unlike past years, however, this year we are more than ready for our seasonal onslaught of out-of-state visitors. Will, Pam, Lisa, Mike, and Nolan have been packing our comics bins (and toys showcases) so full over the past few months that even the very enthusiastic predations of last Saturday's FCBD crowds made zero material impact. Her cracked kneecap is healing nicely, but her broken wrist is still causing her a lot of pain and swelling, which precludes her from driving and accomplishing even the easiest tasks around the house.
