Howdy! I am exhausted today, but also quite happy. To explain, all of our concerns about the success of this year's Free Comic Book Day seemed to take on reality as of 9 AM on Saturday morning, when we only had one lonely fan standing outside our entryway door waiting for us to open at 10 AM. In years past, we have opened as early as 8 AM, with dozens of eager fans waiting outside at open, so our near-complete lack of a FCBD line this year was really rather disconcerting.
Fast forward to sixty minutes later (10 AM), and our FCBD pre-opening line was close to being our longest ever, stretching down the block far beyond the food truck that we had brought in to provide lunches for our visitors. I did not count, but I'm guesstimating that 250-300 fans flooded into our Jason St. Mega-Store right at opening. Were that the entirety of our response, the day would still have been a great diminishment from years past, but that was not the case, at all. In point of fact, this year's Free Comic Book Day was remarkably relaxed, with a very manageable stream of visitors lining up all day long to select their individual choices. We did not run out of our first title until noon, so pretty much everyone was able to get those issues that they were seeking. This year's event was amazingly smooth, and easy!
All of the previous having been said, my personal theory is that a great many of our clients did not feel the need to arrive at our Mega-Store the crack of dawn because Will, Pam, and Dave Saindon (along with the rest of our paid staff and volunteers) have done such a great job of organizing our Free Comic Book Day events in years past that everyone felt completely relaxed in the knowledge that they would be able to receive their three choices without any hassles.
Blessedly, that's exactly the way that it turned out for the estimated 4,000-5,000 fans who stopped by during our 8-hour day. Everyone had fun shopping, and received their free comics, too. You simply can't ask for any more out of Free Comic Book Day.
Moving on to news about our online efforts, we (sadly) have no full sets of this year's FCBD variants remaining to offer you. After we completely sold out online last week, Will still had about a dozen full sets reserved for our in-store clients. All of those sets were claimed on Saturday, however, so we are now totally sold out of sets.
We do, however, have small quantities of 40 of the individual issues remaining, and will gladly give those away for free to anyone placing an order with us this week through Friday, at noon. You can request one of this year's FCBD variants to be included in your shipment for each $10 (net of codeword discounts) that you spend with us. Place your order as per usual, and then simply list your FCBD requests in the "notes" portion of our online order form. We are down to under ten copies remaining on some of the variants, so please do place your order as quickly as possible, for best selection.
On a related note, our annual 60% off FCBD! codeword will be ending this Wednesday, at noon. Effective from Wednesday afternoon onward, we will be offering a 50% off SUMMER! codeword. This still quite generous half price sale will apply to all of our back issue comics and magazines, excepting only new issues, a few variants and restored comics, and our professionally graded items. The next 90 days are (by far!) our busiest of the year, so if you see a particularly desirable back issue listed in our Premium New-In-Stock link, please do not make the mistake of hesitating to place your order. Simply put, we have upwards of 1,000 fans a day visiting our Jason St. Mega-Store during our incredibly busy summer tourist season, many of whom are seeking to purchase a great back issue to take home with them as a treasured momento of their visit. That works out great for us, as it is precisely our frenetic turnover of back issues during the summer that helps us to financially recover from our sometimes chronic (but well-intentioned) over-buying of comic book collections during the fall and winter.
