Chuck's Icy Weekend Adventures

Howdy!

I am really tired this morning, as I worked super hard over this past weekend. I began on Saturday morning by hustling down to Denver to continue cleaning up and enhancing our Jason St. Mega-Store. My efforts early in the day were concentrated upon cleaning up the debris of my week's efforts of constructing our new in-store poster & prints gallery. Despite my best efforts, it is always inevitable that some of my poster bags and boards, as well as a few posters, end up littering our mist important showcases. I was not able to clear up all of those items, but over a couple of hours I certainly made a big difference.

A few Golden Age comics Chuck found while cleaning

My next stop was to battle a huge pile of boxes that have been sitting across from Will Moulton's desk for over four years. Will is our primary buyer of collections within our Mile High Comics Jason St. Mega-Store, and it can be shocking to witness just how many times in any given day that he gets called to the front of the store to look at (yet another) collection that someone is seeking to sell to us. I think that his personal record for a single day is upwards of twenty collections, which is (essentially) one every fifteen minutes. It is a testimonial to Will's tenacity and amazing work ethic that he manages to get anything done in the midst of all that purchasing chaos.

A few more Golden Age comics Chuck found while cleaning

As regards my efforts of Saturday afternoon, I spent a couple of hours digging through boxes of comics that Will purchased sometime around 2018, but never managed to find the time to sort, or to enter into our online inventory. I found many (many!) forgotten treasures tucked in amongst those "lost" boxes, with the most interesting (at least to me...) being an entire short box filled with 100+ pre-1955 Golden Age comics. All of those older comics in that one box are in lower grades, but really, who cares? Pre-1955 comics have become so scarce in recent years that we have a profoundly hard time keeping them in stock, even though we oftentimes price them at several multiple of Overstreet prices. If he doesn't get overwhelmed (again) today, I am hoping that Will will be able to get those older comics graded, and posted for you, at least in time to be listed for you at the end of my Wednesday newsletter.

Bettie delivering donations in Colorado Springs

As much as I wanted to continue with tidying up Will's long-ago collection purchases, I finally had to stop at 3 PM, and begin my three-hour magic of transitioning into my alter-ego, Bettie Pages. This was necessary because Bettie had been called upon by our International Imperial Court System Queen Mother I of the Americas, Nicole Murray-Ramirez, to deliver (in person) $15,000 in Club Q donations to the Colorado Springs Imperial Court.

My appearance in Colorado Springs turned out to be a much more fraught endeavor than we originally envisioned, as the Arctic storm which is now bedeviling those of you living in New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma, first backed into Colorado during its epic southward plunge, coating our north/south Interstate 25 with an incredibly dangerous layer of black ice. My 80-mile drive to Colorado Springs was no big deal, but by the time that I was (finally) able to present my checks to the new Colorado Springs ( United Court of the Pikes Peak Empire) monarchs at 11:30 PM on Saturday, the highway that led back to my home had been converted by a steadily-falling freezing mist into a proverbial skating rink.

Bettie with the new Colorado Springs (United Court of the Pikes Peak Empire) monarchs

If I were a rational person, I would have looked at that nearly-impenetrable layer of ice that coated my minivan's windshield that evening, and immediately headed for the nearest motel. I am very, very stubborn, however, so I chipped away enough of that ice to be able to (barely) see, and then headed for the highway on-ramp. While more than a bit daring in-and-of-itself, what made my decision to drive the 80 miles northward to Denver on a roadway which was coated with black ice seem especially crazy was that I was still in my full Imperial Czarina of the Americas garb, which consists of a stunningly beautiful gown, fancy updo wig, high heels, and a massive amethyst-colored Swarovski jewelry set. Not exactly the best of attire in which to dig out a vehicle stuck in the snow...

In any event, I blazed northward through the darkness, passing many stuck cars that had skidded off of the road (and the remnants of a ten-car wreck) on the notoriously treacherous Monument/Palmer Divide plateau, managing to make it safely to Denver by (only) 1:30 AM. I then stopped at our Jason St. Mega-Store to remove my makeup, and to don my much-safer "boy clothes" attire. By the time that I finally made it home to our farm in Boulder, it was a dreadfully late 3 AM.

While I suffered through a truly miserable drive on Saturday evening, it turns out that I was actually quite lucky. I heard the next morning from someone else from Denver who was at that same Colorado Springs event, and they informed me that CDOT (Colorado Department of Transportation) had ordered I-25 closed at Monument Hill less than 30 minutes after I perilously drove through the (still open) "winter conditions" barrier. Whew!

Chuck with the survival kits

Given my exertions of the night before, it would have made all the sense in the world for me to take Sunday off, and to just rest. What compelled me to drag my weary butters back down to Denver, however, was our chilling weather forecast for last evening, which predicted that we might hit -5 Fahrenheit (-20.5 Celsius). That degree of bitter cold makes life miserable for all of us, but it creates a deadly peril for those who are unhoused. Not only do some homeless people freeze to death under such horrific conditions, but those who do not die have a high probability of losing fingers and/or toes to frostbite. I have personally witnessed the results of human beings who have been frozen alive, and they are truly beyond ghastly.

Now to be clear, the City of Denver now sends out vans to try to persuade most homeless people to avail themselves of public shelters. Many of my clients are afraid of those claustrophobic and oft-times violent places, however, while others are reluctant to leave their meager belongings unattended. Another difficulty for many of the people whom I assist is that they cannot avail themselves of public shelters because they are either A) undocumented, B) intoxicated/addicted, and/or C) have a record as dangerous felons. Those poor people (literally) have nowhere to go, so they huddle together on the frozen sidewalks of lower downtown under tarps and flimsy little tents, which they oftentimes supplement with sheets of cardboard and random rags that they scrounge from dumpsters. It is truly a Kafkaesque existence, from which many do not emerge alive.

Day laborers trying to stay warm downtown

It was for these defenseless people that I roused myself yesterday morning, and drove back to Denver. I then spent three hours of my Sunday afternoon at Jason St. constructing "survival kits" to pass out on the streets. Each kit consisted of two pairs of gloves, two pairs of dry socks, five chemical hand-warmers, five chemical toe-warmers, five granola bars, and one large candle encased in a protective glass holder.

Nicky riding shotgun

At 5 PM, I loaded the 50 kits that I had created into my minivan, and with my beloved dog, Nicky, riding "shotgun," headed for the streets of lower downtown. Over the next two hours, I stopped at raggedy tent after raggedy tent, calling out loudly that I had free warming supplies. When someone answered, I would wait patiently until they managed to extend a trembling hand, and then passed over to them one survival package for each resident. Eerily, I never saw anyone's face, nor did they see mine. I was merely a disembodied voice that delivered a totally unexpected measure of blessed salvation from the icy misery that they were experiencing.

By 7 PM, it was pitch dark out (and more freezing rain was falling), but by then I had completely run out of my kits. Sadly, this was with many more tents and encampments left unvisited, including several just across the street. That left me with no choice but to painfully rationalize my inability to serve all who were in dire need through the simple truism that I am but one person, and that I simply do not have the ability (or means) to save all of Denver's poor people who are in such desperate need. Still, even after convincing myself that I had done the very best that I could, I could not stop my tears from flowing as I reluctantly headed for the comfort and safety of my home in Boulder. Positive outcomes not withstanding, doing what I do is emotionally wrenching, and really, really, hard.

Tent outside

So, it is now Monday, and I am preparing to once again head in to work at our Jason St. Mega-Store. I will spend most if today tidying and cleaning back in Will's area, mostly looking for comics and magazines that I can give to Pam to "intentionally downgrade." This wonderful program (where we unilaterally list Near Mint comics in the much lower-priced grades of Good, very Good, and Fine) was our saving grace over this past weekend, as our online sales really kicked butters, while our Mega-Store sales suffered a bit due to the severe cold.

If you have not yet checked out Pam's intentional downgrades, I think that doing so would be greatly to your benefit. Pam is such an amazingly steady grading "machine" that she is now pushing a staggering total of 20,000 intentionally downgraded comics, encompassing darn near every title, and publisher. The bargains she is offering you are so generous that we have seen a tripling (!) in orders from entirely new clients, online orders in which NO CODEWORD has been utilized! Clearly, we like those kinds of orders very much.

VENOM (2018) (#1-35) (MARVEL) #1

Anyhoo, for you, our amazingly generous 60% of NEWYEAR! codeword remains in effect. As per usual, only newly-published issues, a few variants and restored comics, and our professionally/graded items are exempt. Considering that you can use our ongoing 60% off discount on comics that Pam has also intentionally downgraded for you, the bargains that we are offering you right now are very, very real. Never forget, too, that your support of our online efforts is the primary funding source for my being able to purchase the life-saving supplies that I give out to the poor. I am currently out of stock on several of my most important supplies, so an order from you this week would (clearly) be very much appreciated.

Happy collecting!
