Guts & Glory

by Chuck Rozanski

Howdy!

Today, I'm going to bring up what was once a sacred subject, but may be no longer. Specifically, I need to ask all of you how important is to you that we send out N.I.C.E. NEWS each month? With usage of our online offerings and order form at nearly 100% of all N.I.C.E. membership, Pam and I were wondering if we should maybe put N.I.C.E. NEWS to rest after 25 years. There does come a time, after all, when technology does finally obviate even the very best of older ideas. That having been said, however, we'll keep right on plugging along if a substantial portion of you write back to us and tell us that N.I.C.E. NEWS is still an important tool for you to use in ordering your comics. To provide your feedback, please write to pbrandle@ix.netcom.com. Thanks!

Moving along to more timely topics, I am going to be on the road buying old comics almost the entire winter and spring. Below you can find listed the shows that I have tentatively scheduled. My ultimate decision as to whether or not to attend these shows will be predicated on my health and stamina, but for the time being those are holding up quite well.

January 12thClifton, New Jersey
January 19thCharlotte, North Carolina
January 25th-27thOrlando, Florida - FX (tentative)
February 3rdAkron/Canton, Ohio
February 10thBoston, Massachusetts
February 17thPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania
February 22nd-25thWondercon - San Francisco, California (tentative)

If the above schedule seems very daunting, it is actually mild compared to the whirlwind tour that I will be taking during March, April, May, and June. All told, I intend to be on the road just about every weekend until the 4th of July!

So why am I traveling so much? Primarily because demand for back issues on our website is so strong right now that I need to be buying tens of thousands of back issues each month, just to keep us well stocked. And those purchases cannot be just bulk boxes of mid-1990's overstock, as our buyers are becoming increasing discriminating. They want me to bring back top-of-the line Silver Age and Golden Age comics, as well as huge numbers of popular titles, such as Spider-Man, X-Men, Batman, and Wonder Woman. I am proud to say that I have been succeeding in finding even more than what we need in those critical back issue comics genres during the past two months. But that having been said, I am by no means assuming that I can keep restocking us by visiting the same areas over and over. So I am intentionally working to branch out to other regions with each of my trips, making even more friends among the back issue dealers in those areas by paying them premium prices for their key books. Up to this point my buying program has been working incredibly well, so I am hoping that I can continue my success all through the spring. I will then take July-October off for the San Diego convention, running my farm, and attending my Indian Markets in Santa Fe. With luck, I'll have so many great back issues purchased by then that our inventory crews will be kept very busy working down that backlog through November, when I'll start heading out to shows again.

If you are going to be attending any of the shows that I just outlined, please do look for me there. I genuinely love meeting with anyone who shops with Mile High Comics, but N.I.C.E. members hold a special place in my heart. No matter how busy I may appear, please do stop by and say "Howdy!" I may like buying comics, but I LOVE meeting all of you in person! No matter how copious my comics buying may be at any given show, I don't rate any comics convention a real success unless I also get to meet someone who shops with us. So please do visit with me!

That's it for today. I already need to start packing for my next trip, so I have to leave you for now. But you can always keep up with my travels via the twice-a-week newsletter, or write to Pam at pbrandle@ix.netcom.com to confirm that I am going to be at any given show.
