Lulu of a Time at San Diego Comic-Con
Lulu Awards 2001

Go Girl! Sweeps Lulu Awards

At this year's Comic-Con International: San Diego, the Friends of Lulu were proud to present their annual Lulu awards to creators nominated and chosen by our membership. Four awards were given in three categories. FoL began giving out their annual awards in 1997, encouraging and recognizing diversity and excellence in the comic industry.

Lulu of the Year: this award recognizes the artist, project, or organization that best exemplifies the goals of the Friends of Lulu. Go Girl!, the tale of a teenager who inherits her mother's powers, was chosen. Trina Robbins, creator and writer, and Anne Timmons, artist, were honored for their work on this book. Go Girl! is available from Image Comics.

Kim Yale Award for Best New Talent: Go Girl! again, with FoL members choosing Anne Timmons as their favorite new talent for her work on this book.

Female Cartoonists Hall of Fame: This year sees two inductees into the Hall of Fame, with Hilda Terry and Trina Robbins receiving an equal number of votes for this honor. We are proud to include them both. For more info on both, see biographical data at the end of the release.

Lulu Prepare For Another Year

Later that weekend, the Friends of Lulu held its annual meeting and elected a new Board of Directors who will take office on September 1st of this year. Returning to the Board are Liz Schiller, Deborah Ginsberg, Anne Blaeske and Michelle Denise Norton. New board members are Greg Nagler, Dan Fogel and Ed Douglas. The annual meeting was devoted to planning for the future, with members suggesting projects and activities. The Board looks forward to discussing and developing an exciting slate of things FoL can do. We'll keep you posted.

Gene Ha, Sketch Fantastic

Special thanks to Gene Ha, artist on Wildstorm's Top Ten (other credits include DC's Fortunate Son graphic novel and creating Oktane with Gerard Jones for Dark Horse), who asked the fans he did sketches for to make a donation to Friends of Lulu rather than pay him for their sketches. This generous gesture brought in more than $300 for the organization.

The Friends of Lulu is a non-profit organization founded in 1994, dedicated to increasing the participation of women and girls in comics, as readers and as professionals. FoL maintains a listing of Women Doing Comics on their website at http://www.friends-lulu.org. Their most recent victory for girl, boy, women and family friendly comics is their Xeric award winning anthology, Storytime, available this Fall at local comic book stores.

Trina Robbins produced the very first all-woman comic book, It Ain't Me, Babe, in 1970, and has been an advocate for women in comics ever since, along with drawing and writing them. In 1988, she co-edited StripAIDS USA, an AIDS benefit comic that made more than $16,000 for AIDS causes, and in 1990 she and current Friends of Lulu board president Liz Schiller produced CHOICES, a pro-choice comic book as a benefit for NOW (the National Organization for Women). She's written more than eight books, most of them about comics as they pertain to women. Her two latest books are a biography of early 20th-century superstar cartoonist Nell Brinkley and a book about dark'n'dirty goddesses, "Eternally Bad."
