Howdy!

Yesterday was quite emotional for me. It began at 3 AM when I awoke in my warm bed in Boulder, and suddenly remembered Bayard Rustin, the prominent civil rights hero of the 1950's and 1960's who was the behind-the-scenes organizer of such historic events as the 1963 "March on Washington," a gathering which saw our national Mall filled to overflowing with hundreds of thousands of people of color, and their supporters. That epic event forever entered into our national consciousness when midway through Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. won over nearly an entire nation with his monumental "I Have a Dream" speech. In testimonial thereof, the National Park Service has inscribed the very spot on the marble steps where Dr. King uttered those prophetic verses. I think that it really awesome!

Bayard Rustin

What is not so awesome, however, was that Bayard Rustin was shunned by many in the civil rights movement (and kept at a distance by Dr. King) because he was openly and proudly gay, during a time when you were deemed a criminal and a deviant for being homosexual. Everyone respected his incredible talent at organizing, but many wanted nothing to do with him as a person, frequently because of hateful religious bias. Sound familiar? Whatever the case may be, Rustin's talent was such that he was honored with a LIFE magazine cover (along with his mentor, A. Philip Randolph) and was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Not too bad of an outcome for someone who had to somehow find the courage to be among the very first out gay people (and most certainly one of the first gay men of color...) in America.

1963 March on Washington

That is why, after I took a crack-of-dawn bargain flight from Denver to Washington, DC, yesterday morning, I then walked over a mile from the US Capitol building, and eventually climbed the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to the exact spot where Bayard Rustin positioned Dr. King for the greatest speech of his life. I took along my little Transgender rights banner, and proudly displayed it not only above Dr. King's inscription, but also inside that most sacred of American memorials, near where that photographer from LIFE magazine immortalized Bayard Rustin, in 1963. Given that Bayard spent his entire life fighting for equal rights for ALL people, I thought that my little gesture was completely appropriate and apt, not to mention long overdue.

LIFE Magazine cover

Truth be told, however, my honoring Bayard Rustin was not why I flew to Washington, DC. I came because Dennis and Judy Shepard invited me a month ago to join them here today for the dedication ceremony yesterday evening for the beautiful bronze plaque that is going to be mounted tomorrow morning outside the crypt in our National Cathedral where Matthew Shepard's ashes are forever interred. I am truly so glad that I came, as it was a remarkably moving ceremony, during which I cried, a lot. Especially when Mary Lambert sang her hit song "She Keeps Me Warm," and a cover of "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton. Every note she sang was perfect...

Matthew Shepard dedication ceremony Flyer

All the previous having been said, what moved me the most that evening was when Judy Shepard stated unequivocally that Matt was now laid to rest for the final time, and that at this point it was solely up to us who were sitting in the pews to somehow find the strength and courage to change our world for the better. In a nutshell, that is why I am getting up (again) at 5 AM in the morning. I will be living my truth as Bettie Pages today, and I will thus proudly don my gown, wig, heels, and jewels and then stand for several hours with my little Transgender rights sign on the front steps of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Matthew Shepard beautiful bronze plaque

So you know, the high temperature is projected to only be in the mid-40's in Washington, with a brisk wind blowing, so the odds that I am going to be miserably cold are quite high. Nonetheless, I will persist. Why? Because I owe it not only to the memory of Matthew Shepard, but also to my 22 sisters of color who have (thus far...) been murdered this year because they were Transgender. My dead sisters no longer have anyone to speak for them, so I will spend my morning shivering, and repeating their names, over and over, again. It's not much, but it is all that I can do. Say her name...

Chuck at the US Capitol building

My lonely vigil outside the Federal courtroom where the future of all Transgender rights will soon be decided may be completely and utterly futile, but I absolutely refuse to give up. Simply put, America is a participatory Democracy where we all have the freedom to speak our minds, whenever we wish. Sadly, however, far too many truly good people fail to take advantage of this wonderful freedom, and thus cede the field of public speech to hateful demagogues. If I am alone in voicing support for the right of Transgender people to receive exactly the same fair treatment in housing, employment, and public accommodation as everyone else, then so be it. Never forget, silence implies assent. Love is, love...

Chuck at the Lincoln Memorial

That's it for today. That's simply all that I have to give. The good news is that Will, Pam, Lisa, and all the other beautiful staff members of Mile High Comics are keeping things running quite well in Denver, which is truly the only reason that I can take off on these 36-hour jaunts of seeking justice. Please do take a look at the New-In-Stock and Premium New-In-Stock links that Will just posted.
