Howdy! After a whirlwind 5-day, 2,600-mile round trip journey to Oroville, California, I am back home at my beloved Jay Hill Farm. I will be (once again) leaving at 6 AM in the morning, however, as I will be attending the Great Southwestern Antiques Show at the Albuquerque fairgrounds, tomorrow afternoon. This once-a-year show is (by far) my favorite venue in which to shop for rare Pueblo pottery, so I don’t want to miss it. Especially considering that it was cancelled last year due to Covid. Given the scariness of the new Delta variant, who knows what next year might bring?
My second-favorite pottery show of the year is the Whitehawk Antique Indian Arts show in Santa Fe, which begins a week from tomorrow. Nanette, and I, have reservations at a little hotel just off the Paseo de Peralta for all of next weekend, but I am beginning to wonder if public events are a good idea for her at this moment in time. Simply put, there are still too many non-immunized people running around who are endangering the lives of others. Nanette has a compromised immune system due to her near-fatal bout of the intestinal ailment C-dif, so putting her in proximity of people who are taking profoundly unnecessary risks seems quite fraught. New Mexico does have a low rate of transmission, however, so maybe we’ll still go, but just be very, very careful. We’ll decide next week.
As regards Mile High Comics, Free Comic Book Day for this year is on the same Saturday as the Whitehawk show (August 14th). We have purchased a limited number of Free Comic Book Day variant editions to give away, but given Covid, nowhere near as many tens of thousands as in the past. We will also have complete set available, both of this year’s variants, and of last year’s. Sets will be $100 each, with fewer than 100 sets of each year available. Because we are having to take on added costs to run this year’s event, however, funds from our sets will not be donated to charity, but will rather be used to help to pay for our FCBD event. We sincerely hope to be able to return to our charitable giving next year. Sets will ship on the Monday following FCBD.
Another important point about this year’s Free Comic Book Day event is that we are going to be enforcing mask requirements, and limiting the number of people in the store to approximately 100 at any given moment in time. Simply put, our goal is to have fun, while also maintaining safety for our staff and guests. This may end up causing a real cluster if several thousand people show up (as has been the case in the past…), but that’s just the nature of life right now. There is no way that we are going to set into motion FCBD becoming a Covid super-spreader event in our beautiful store, where even vaccinated people get ill. Above all else, your safety is always our first and foremost concern.
If you would like to avoid all the potential difficulties of this year’s FCBD, I urge you to order a complete set. As I mentioned earlier, our supplies of sets are quite limited, but given past demand, we should have enough to fill all orders received prior to the event. Please not delay in placing your order, however, as there are no reserves at Diamond. Once our pre-made sets are gone, there will be no more.
That’s it for today. I will be sorting comics all afternoon, so that Will and Pam have plenty to do while I am away in Albuquerque. They are scrambling to keep our listings of comics complete for you, as the added demand from our 50% off 10YEARS! codeword sale is selling far more comics than we typically turn over in a given week.
