As those of you who follow my exploits on our Mile High Comics Facebook page are already aware, I spend an inordinate amount of my time in the streets and back alleys of lower downtown Denver. I go there because that is one of the few refuge places left for those who are homeless, and unwilling to accept the restrictions imposed at the city-owned shelters. Many of these people are addicts, recently released from jail, and/or mentally ill, so the vast majority of people (including our social service agencies) have written them off as not worth saving. Chuck with a full van load I take issue with that negative assessment, as when I was a teen I once lived in my mother's old 1963 Chevy Impala for four months, subsisting on dented cans of cold food that I purchased from the discount bin at the back of the grocery store. In that regard, I was among the very lucky, as I had somewhere dry to sleep when it rained, and a secure place where I could lock up my stash of food. For many others, being perpetually exposed to the elements was a sad truism, and the necessity for daily urban hunter/gathering (which often involves dumpster-diving for spoiled food) a grim reality. In great measure, that is why I do not judge. All that I care about is that I see hundreds of people who are hungry and in need, with the knowledge that I have the capacity to help them. It matters not one whit to me whether they are black, brown, white, or Asian, or whether they are male or female, gay or straight, or (like me) somewhere in between. All that matters is that I have been blessed by providence with good health, and even better good fortune, and that my blessings have provided me with the means to make a small positive difference in these people's otherwise relentlessly miserable lives. Chuck getting ready to drive with a full van load I could continue on this topic for several more paragraphs, but my preaching about the need to inject goodness into your own life was really not my goal. I merely mention my personal efforts to help the poor in order to explain why this is my first Mile High Comics newsletter in ten days. Simply put, I have been loading my minivan with upwards of 2,000 lbs of food every night, and then roaming the streets in search of tent colonies, and those solitary individuals who are painfully making their way down the sidewalks near the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, with their sad little roller bags in tow. At this stage in my life, preventing these people from going to bed hungry, takes priority. Just saying... While my evenings are spent out on the streets, most days I have been working with Lisa here in our Jason St. Mega-Store to slowly (and methodically), work our way through an immense 10' tall bookshelf canyon that contains 200,000+ back issues comics, all in packs of ten of the same issue. Lisa reads out the titles and issue numbers to me, and then I look up those particular issues to see our current supply on hand. If we already have enough copies on hand for 24 months of single copy sales, then we commit that package of ten into the mix of our "Mystery Box" program. Chuck pulling ten packs So you know, a great many of the comics that are now ending up being committed into our "Mystery Box" are ones that I had already decided that I would much rather keep. Simply put, those comics in that particular bookshelf area are the specific titles and issues that we intentionally set aside three years ago, when we sold off a huge lot of one million of our particularly cheesy back issues to a bulk buyer from New York. My relinquishing these better issues is somewhat of a sacrifice, but one that I do think is well-justified by the crazy pandemic world in which we now all are forced to exist. I do want to emphasize, however, that our commitment remains to serve those of you who are seeking to build your own private collections via our online store. While building "Mystery Box" has consumed a great deal of my own time recently, our back issue comics order fulfilment team has been working wonders on shipping the hundreds of orders that we are receiving that are utilizing our new 40% off JOY! codeword. I had thought that it would take us three weeks to catch up from that enormous backlog, but they proved me wrong by catching up, already!
