50% Off All Back Issue Comics Sale Ending

Howdy!

I finally took a day off yesterday, after coming in to work for at least a few hours at Mile High Comics for every single day since March 7th. Truth be told, I only took yesterday off because my wonderful wife, Nanette, developed a headache, a small fever, and a feeling of extreme exhaustion. While those symptom do not exactly jibe with those of Covid-19, out of an abundance of caution, I stayed home. As it turned out, there was really no need to worry, as Nanette's test came back negative for Coronavirus. She has some sort of minor league flu, which is no big deal. She should be just fine in a couple of days.

So you know, my only concern about not working at Jason St. yesterday was that I was unable to sort out even more of our surplus comics for inclusion in the stacks from which we build our awesome 5 lb "Mystery Boxes" filled with random assortments of reading issues. With just word-of-mouth advertising propelling their sales, we have already shipped out well over 75,000 comics! in "Mystery Boxes" to homebound comics fans all around America. Really and truly, these 5 lb boxes have been one of my very best innovations, ever. I am starting to run low on some of my overstock, however, so I may need to stop offering some boxes. Just saying...

While I have personally been building "Mystery Boxes" seven days a week, the rest of our team has been totally focused on shipping orders for individual back issues. This will probably not come as much of a surprise to you, but our sales of orders for specific individual comics titles have tripled of late. That surge in orders put us significantly behind in our shipping for a while, but that unshipped order backlog was finally laid to rest over the weekend. Lynne, Will, Noah, and all the rest of the dedicated members of our fulfillment team, are already today (Monday) shipping orders that we just received over the weekend. That makes me very happy!

It also makes me (somewhat) happy that we are going to be allowed to reopen our Jason St. Mega-Store on this Saturday, May 9th, at 10 AM. I only say "somewhat" because I am not going to be able to disassemble my working area for building "Mystery Boxes," which is currently taking up our entire events area. I guess that I will have to just erect some chairs as a protective barrier, just to keep inquisitive folks from accidentally disturbing my efforts.

The best news about our reopening is that our Mega-Store is just about the safest place to bring your kids for a long-awaited day out of the house. The interior of our store is over an acre in size, so maintaining social distancing does not require any sort of effort. Please do bring your protective mask, however, as Denver now has a city ordinance requiring protective masks to be worn at all times in all retail stores.

Another bit of good news is that Lisa and David have been restocking our Mega-Store toys and comics shelves from the dozens of unsorted collections that we have had stashed in the back, so the store is actually quite a bit better stock today, than it was when we were first ordered to close, way back in March. If you get a chance to visit us on Saturday, please stop on by! Cambridge would love to see you...

I will close with a quick mention of scarcity and zero-sum collecting. Simply put. Both Marvel and DC are returning to publishing new comics at the end of May, but with incredibly limited weekly offerings of only a small handful of new periodicals, and several trade paperback collections. Frankly, there is absolutely no way that they can ever cover their pre-Covid operating costs with those just those meager releases. Either they are going to spend a lot of money (which neither Disney or Warner have right how...) on completely rebuilding their publishing schedules over the next couple of months, or we are witnessing a permanent downsizing/structural change.

Clearly, our industry "New Normal" has yet to be defined, but if you are currently in possession of a significant of number of nice older comic books, be very glad that you built your collection when you did. It is beginning to look to me like the days of oversupply in back issues are about to be over, as fans are now seeking recent back issues out on a scale that is nearly unprecedented. I easily could see that expansion in demand leading to higher prices in the not-so-distant-future for many back issue comics, but most especially for the very low print run issues from the past ten years. There is simply no way that there are enough copies of those titles that are not already locked up in private collections to satisfy demand. Just something to think about...

Happy collecting!
