The dynamic Jack Kirby cover provides an action-packed lead-in to this tale of abduction and ambition. Against the backdrop of an unfolding scheme by the international terrorist gang Factor Three, the X-Men are drawn into the mad plans of an ancient mutant, one who once took the place of Merlin himself in a titanic battle with Thor (see Journey into Mystery #96, Thor Annual #2).
Seeking a beautiful companion to share his conquest of Earth, the centuries-old mutant calling himself the Warlock kidnaps and hypnotizes Marvel Girl and holds her in his underground castle a mad mix between technology and medieval charm. Professor X is brought along with his powers neutralized as is the high-flying Angel who soon falls prey to Warlock's hypnotism. It's not long, however, before the rest of the X-Men (including the lovesick Cyclops) arrive and a deadly joust is arranged with the fate of mankind hanging in the balance.
"The Warlock Wakes" by Roy Thomas and fill-in artist Jack Sparling provides the sophomore appearance of the first Warlock, who would later be known as Maha Yogi when he squares off against the Incredible Hulk and the enigmatic Doctor Druid (see the Incredible Hulk #210). Sparling's renderings offer highly expressive faces, detailed background vistas and alluring depictions of Marvel Girl. And as always Thomas succeeds in revisiting a promising villain, energizing his evil plans with renewed vigor.
