What If? #21 (1989)
"What If the Amazing Spider-Man Had Married the Black Cat?" The lovely Felicia Hardy replaces Mary Jane Watson in Peter Parker's life or does she? As writer Danny Fingeroth and artist Jim Valentino show, the truth will out--even though, as the Black Cat, Felicia loves Spider-Man deeply. But is her love for Peter as heart-felt?
Like his namesake, the Vulture circles the lives of Peter Parker and his new bride, swooping down to attack their loved ones. Acting on secret information gleaned from a street-side marital argument between the costumed newlyweds, the Vulture sets events in motion that inevitably lead to tragedy.
Valentino's flashy and almost cartoony style belies the seriousness of the subject matter he deals with here. As Uatu, the Watcher, relates this isn't a story that finds a happy ending easily and along the way many have to pay the price for costumed heroes who fall in love. It seems Peter can't even find happiness in alternative dimensions.
