New Avengers (2004) #1
Premiere issue. "Breakout" Part One is written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by David Finch and Danny Miki. Beginning this issue: a whole new chapter in the lives of the Earth's mightiest heroes. After the Scarlet Witch's nervous breakdown resulted in the deaths of the Vision, Ant-Man and Hawkeye, the Avengers went their separate ways, devastated by their grief. However, the Avengers' foes aren't stopping their mad schemes to threaten innocent lives. A secret meeting is arranged with Elektro, one of Spider-Man's oldest enemies, to orchestrate a prison break at Ryker's Island. Coincidently at the prison facility, heroes have come to visit one of its inmates and look over the super-villains incarcerated there. Matt (Daredevil) Murdock, Jessica (Spider-Woman) Drew and Luke (Power Man) Cage join Murdock's law partner Foggy Nelson in touring the S.H.I.E.L.D.-operated facility. Suddenly, Elektro makes his move.
The spectacular breakout immediately draws the attention of Spider-Man who swings his way over to Ryker's by webbing a passing police helicopter. Even though the whirlybird gets nailed by one of Elektro's lightning blasts, Spidey manages to make it the facility and rendezvous with Captain America, who has been called in by S.H.I.E.L.D. As the web-slinger and the Living Legend of World War II prepare their strategy, Elektro frees dozens of super-foes and wins their allegiance and gratitude. Below the surface of the island, Daredevil, Spider-Woman and Power Man make their way through the darkness to the cell of the prisoner they came to visit; the legendary but tragic hero: Ryan (The Sentry) Reynolds.
