JLA (1996) #96
"The Heart of the Matter" The Tenth Circle Part 3 is written by John Byrne and Chris Claremont with art by Byrne and Jerry Ordway. Guest-starring the Doom Patrol. The Leaguers continue to do battle with the forces of darkness; vampires led by the monstrous Crucifer. Batman survives a gunshot from a mind-controlled police detective to take on two bat-winged adversaries in an encounter that gives new meaning to the term "stakeout." Meanwhile, Flash, Martian Manhunter and the Green Lantern worry over the disappearance of their teammate the Atom. The tiny hero has entered Manitou Raven's sorcerous Telling Stone on the subatomic level and become the prisoner of a microscopic race of mantis-people. And the telekinetic Faith, captured by the hypnotized Superman and taken to Castle Crucifer, is the next to fall under the vampire-lord's fangs.
A few doors away, the young meta-human Nudge explains to her colleague Vortex how closely her fate is tied with that of the four-armed simian named Grunt. Even though both were rescued from cruel circus-owners by the Doom Patrol, they rejected membership in the heroic group and fell into Crucifer's clutches instead. While the Doom Patrol tries to decide its next move, Crucifer commands Superman to bring Wonder Woman to his castle. The Amazon Princess has come dangerously close to uncovering Crucifer's plot and must be eliminated, he reasons. After a pitched battle with the Man of Steel, Wonder Woman seems on the verge of ending Crucifer's bloody murder-spree. But at the last minute, the vampire appears much more difficult to kill than anyone expected!
