Iron Man (1968) #23
"The Man Who Killed Tony Stark!" is written by Archie Goodwin and drawn by George Tuska and Joe Gaudioso. Grieving the recent murder of the lovely Janice Cord at the hands of the Titanium Man, Iron Man seeks out the crooks who smuggled the menace into the country in the first place. Trashing their seagoing vessel, Iron Man gets little comfort from turning over the criminals to the authorities. Realizing he needs some time away to deal with his tragic loss, Tony Stark packs for a long weekend at his country estate.
Along the way, he encounters Cheryl Porter, the young wife of one of the smugglers Iron Man just incarcerated. For turning in her husband and his accomplices to the police after she learned of their connection to the Titanium Man, Cheryl became a marked woman. A colorful hitman named the Mercenary now tracks her down as Stark agrees to protect her at his secluded cabin. Meanwhile, Vincent Sandhurst, a crooked attorney working for Janice Cord until Stark exposed him, also vows vengeance on the millionaire industrialist. A desperate three-way showdown punctuates this story of vengeance and survival.
